Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 122

Karna Meets Bhishma on the Bed of Arrows

After the kings withdraw, Karna hurries to the fallen Bhishma and falls at his feet. Bhishma embraces him, tells him he is Kunti's son and the Sun's, explains his past harshness, praises his prowess and urges him to make peace with the Pandavas. Karna admits his birth but will not betray Duryodhana, and asks leave to fight Arjuna; Bhishma gives it. The parva closes with Vaishampayana's account of the merit of hearing the Bhishma Parva.

Verse 1 (6.122.1)

tataste pārthivāḥ sarve jagmuḥ svānālayānpunaḥ | tūṣṇīṃbhūte mahārāja bhīṣme śantanunandane

Then all those kings went back again to their own dwellings, O great king, while Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, lay silent.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, one row per verse, 6-122-1 to 6-122-44, with speaker headings सञ्जय (verse 1), कर्ण (23), भीष्म (34; printed 6-112-34x, a typo for 6-122), सञ्जय (39) and वैशंपायन (40), ending with its colophon naming this the 122nd adhyaya and closing the Bhishmavadha Parva and the Bhishma Parva). Page and input agree on all 44 verses; the page's commentary notes (on 3, 12, 15, 18, 19, 22, 24, 28, 30, 33) are not part of the text. The adhyaya corresponds to the critical edition 6.117.1–34 with its star passages 6.117.9a*0505, 11d*0506, 22d*0507, 23f*0509 and 26d*0510 (all on the page); the critical edition's 6.117.4b*0504, 23f*0508, 26d*0511 and the closing 34d*0512 and 34d*0513 (two different, longer fruit-of-hearing passages) are not on the page. Wikisource reorders and re-couples several lines (verses 6–7, 9–13, 25–31). This verse is the critical edition's 6.117.1ab–cd.

Verse 2 (6.122.2)

śrutvā tu nihataṃ bhīṣmaṃ rādheyaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ | īṣadāgatasaṃtrāsastvarayopajagāma ha

But Radheya, best of men, hearing that Bhishma had been struck down, came hurrying to him, with a slight tremor of dread.

Verse 3 (6.122.3)

sa dadarśa mahātmānaṃ śaratalpagataṃ tadā | janmaśayyāgataṃ vīraṃ kārtikeyamiva prabhum

He saw the great-souled one lying on his bed of arrows, a hero lying as on the bed of his birth, like the lord Karttikeya.

Note on the text: Line 2 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.3cd (वीरम् for devam).

Verse 4 (6.122.4)

nimīlitākṣaṃ taṃ vīraṃ sāśrukaṇṭhastadā vṛṣā | abhyetya pādayostasya nipapāta mahādyutiḥ

With tears in his throat, the radiant Vrisha came up to the hero, whose eyes were closed, and fell at his feet.

Note on the text: The critical edition has an extra line between these two, the star passage 6.117.4b*0504_01 ("Bhishma, Bhishma, mighty-armed!"), which is not on the page.

Verse 5 (6.122.5)

rādheyo'haṃ kuruśreṣṭha nityamakṣigatastava | dveṣyo'tyantamanāgāḥ sanniti cainamuvāca ha

"I am Radheya, best of the Kurus, always an eyesore to you, hated though blameless" — so he said to him.

Note on the text: Line 1 reads नित्यमक्षिगतस्तव (the critical edition has cāṣkigatas, 6.117.5a); a recension variant.

Verse 6 (6.122.6)

tacchrutvā kuruvṛddho hi śaraiḥ saṃvṛtalocanaḥ | rahitaṃ dhiṣṇyamālokya samutsārya ca rakṣiṇaḥ

Hearing this, the aged Kuru, his eyes shut fast by the arrows, looked at the empty place, and sent the guards away,

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.6a (कुरुवृद्धो हि शरैः संवृतलोचनः for kuruvṛddhaḥ sa balāt saṃvṛttalocanaḥ); line 2 is 6.117.7a (the automatic alignment missed both). Wikisource interleaves the critical edition's verses 6 and 7: this verse is 6a + 7a, the next is 7c + 6c.

Verse 7 (6.122.7)

piteva putraṃ gāṅgeyaḥ parirabhyaikapāṇinā | śanairudvīkṣya sasnehamidaṃ vacanamabravīt

and, as a father holds a son, the son of Ganga embraced him with one arm, slowly looked up at him, and said these affectionate words.

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.7c (परिरभ्यैकपाणिना for pariṣvajyaikabāhunā); line 2 is 6.117.6cd. See the note on verse 6.

"That you have vied with me is in no way displeasing to me. If you were not to come to me, it would surely not be well for you.

Note on the text: A recension variant of the critical edition's 6.117.8ab (न विप्रियं ममैवेह यत्स्पर्धेथा मया सह for ehy ehi me vipratīpa spardhase tvaṃ mayā saha); line 2 is 6.117.8cd.

Verse 9 (6.122.9)

kaunteyastvaṃ na rādheyo na tavādhirathaḥ pitā | sūryajastvaṃ mahābāho vidito nāradānmayā

You are Kunti's son, not Radha's; Adhiratha is not your father. You are born of the Sun, O mighty-armed — I learned it from Narada

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.117.9a with its star passage 6.117.9a*0505_01–02 (न तवाधिरथः पिता, सूर्यजस्त्वं महाबाहो), which Wikisource sets into a couplet.

Verse 10 (6.122.10)

and from Krishna Dvaipayana too, and by your radiance as well, beyond doubt. And I bear you no hatred, my child; I tell you the truth.

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.9c (तेजसा च for keśavāc ca); line 2 is 6.117.10ab. Corrected द्वेषोस्ति → द्वेषोऽस्ति (missing avagraha in Wikisource; the critical edition reads dveṣo 'sti).

Verse 11 (6.122.11)

tejovadhanimittaṃ tu paruṣaṃ tvāhamabruvam | akasmātpāṇḍavānhi tvaṃ dviṣasīti matirmama

I spoke harshly to you only to break your pride, for I thought: "Without cause you hate the Pandavas."

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.10cd (परुषं त्वाहमब्रुवम् for paruṣāṇy aham uktavān); line 2 is 6.117.11ab.

Verse 12 (6.122.12)

yenāsi bahuśo rājñā coditaḥ sūtanandana | jāto'si dharmalopena tataste buddhirīdṛśī

Because that king urged you on so many times, O son of a charioteer, and because you were born of a lapse of dharma, your mind has become what it is —

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.11cd सूतनन्दन for yenāsi bahuśo rūkṣaṃ … sūryanandana); line 2 is the star passage 6.117.11d*0506_01 (identical).

Verse 13 (6.122.13)

nīcāśrayānmatsareṇa dveṣiṇī guṇināmapi | tenāsi bahuśo rūkṣaṃ śrāvitaḥ kurusaṃsadi

hostile even to the virtuous, out of dependence on the base and out of envy. That is why you were made to hear harsh words so many times in the Kuru assembly.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records both lines in its apparatus as the star passages 6.117.11d*0506_02 (line 1) and *0506_03 (line 2). Corrected गुमिनामपि → गुणिनामपि (misprint in Wikisource; ण lost, गुणिनाम् "of the virtuous"; the critical edition reads guṇinām).

Verse 14 (6.122.14)

jānāmi samare vīryaṃ śatrubhirduḥsahaṃ bhuvi | brahmaṇyatāṃ ca śauryaṃ ca dāne ca paramāṃ sthitim

I know your valour in battle, which no foe on earth can bear, your devotion to the brahmins, your heroism, and your highest rank in giving.

Note on the text: A recension variant of the critical edition's 6.117.12 (शत्रुभिर्दुःसहं भुवि for śatrubhir duḥsahaṃ tava; परमां स्थितिम् for paramāṃ gatim).

Verse 15 (6.122.15)

na tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścitpuruṣeṣvamaropama | kulabhedabhayāccāhaṃ sadā paruṣamuktavān

Among men there is no one like you, O godlike one; it was only from fear of a split in the family that I always spoke harshly.

Note on the text: Line 2 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.13cd (कुलभेदभयाच्चाहं for kulabhedaṃ ca matvāhaṃ).

Verse 16 (6.122.16)

iṣvastre bhārasaṃdhāne lāghave'strabale tathā | sadṛśaḥ phalgunenāsi kṛṣṇena ca mahātmanā

In archery, in handling the weight of weapons, in lightness of hand and in the power of your missiles, you are the equal of Phalguna and of the great-souled Krishna.

Verse 17 (6.122.17)

karṇa kāśipuraṃ gatvā tvayaikena dhanuṣmatā | kanyārthe kururājasya rājāno mṛditā yudhi

Karna, going to the city of Kashi, you alone, bow in hand, crushed the kings in battle for the sake of the Kuru king's bride.

Note on the text: A recension variant of the critical edition's 6.117.15 (काशिपुरं, कन्यार्थे for rājapuraṃ, tasyārthe).

Verse 18 (6.122.18)

tathā ca balavānrājā jarāsandho durāsadaḥ | samare samaraślāghinna tvayā sadṛśo'bhavat

And the mighty king Jarasandha, so hard to approach — O you who delight in praise of battle — was no match for you in the fight.

Note on the text: Line 2 differs in word order from the critical edition's 6.117.16cd (न त्वया सदृशोऽभवत् for tvayā na sadṛśo 'bhavat).

Verse 19 (6.122.19)

brahmaṇyaḥ sattvayodhī ca tejasā ca balena ca | devagarbhasamaḥ saṅkhye manuṣyairadhiko yudhi

Devoted to the brahmins, a fighter of true courage, with splendour and with strength, in battle like a child of the gods, you surpass men in combat.

Note on the text: A recension variant of the critical edition's 6.117.17 (ब्रह्मण्यः सत्त्वयोधी च तेजसा च बलेन च । देवगर्भसमः सङ्ख्ये मनुष्यैरधिको युधि for brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca tejasārka ivāparaḥ / devagarbho 'jitaḥ saṃkhye manuṣyair adhiko bhuvi); the automatic similarity is low (0.73) because both lines differ in wording.

Verse 20 (6.122.20)

vyapanīto'dya manyurme yastvāṃ prati purā kṛtaḥ | daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa na śakyamativartitum

The anger I once held against you has been put away today. Fate cannot be overcome by human effort.

Verse 21 (6.122.21)

"I know all this, mighty-armed, without a doubt, just as you say, Bhishma: I am Kunti's son, not a charioteer's.

Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 6.117.21ab (महाबाहो for mahāprājña); line 2 reads मे भीष्म for durdharṣa. The heading कर्ण उवाच is the page's (row 6-122-23x).

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); line 1 is the star passage 6.117.22d*0507_01; line 2 is a variant of 6.117.23ab (पुत्रदारं for yad udāraṃ). all of it I have given up for Duryodhana's sake, O generous giver; and let not this warrior's calling end in death by disease, O Kaurava.

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 6.117.23cd (first half); line 2 is its star passage 6.117.23f*0509_01.
