Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 50

Yudhishthira's Despair and the Krauncha Array

After the first day's fighting, Yudhishthira goes to Krishna in despair at Bhishma's slaughter of his army, says he would rather retire to the forest than lead his allies to death, and complains that only Bhima fights with all his strength while Arjuna stands by. Krishna comforts him, reminding him of his brothers and allies, of Dhrishtadyumna as commander and of Shikhandin as Bhishma's appointed death. Yudhishthira charges Dhrishtadyumna to lead the army, Dhrishtadyumna vows to fight Drona, Bhishma and the rest, and on Yudhishthira's word he draws up the Krauncharuna array for the second day, with Arjuna at its head and the allied peoples assigned to its head, eyes, neck, back and wings.
