Bhima Slaughters the Kalingas

Dhritarashtra asks how the Kalinga king, sent by Duryodhana, fought Bhima. Sanjaya tells how the Chedis abandoned Bhima, who alone slew Shakradeva and Bhanumat, the Kalinga princes, leapt onto an elephant and then ranged on foot with sword and shield through the Kalinga ranks, before killing Shrutayus, his wheel-guards Satyadeva and Satya, and Ketumat. Dhrishtadyumna, Satyaki and the Pandava forces come to his support; Bhishma advances, kills Bhima's horses and is carried off the field when Satyaki slays his charioteer, and Satyaki embraces Bhima for having crushed the Kalinga array single-handed.

Verse 1 (6.54.1)

मम पुत्रसमादिष्टः कलिङ्गो वाहिनीपतिः । कथमद्भुतकर्माणं भीमसेनं महाबलम् ॥

mama putrasamādiṣṭaḥ kaliṅgo vāhinīpatiḥ | kathamadbhutakarmāṇaṃ bhīmasenaṃ mahābalam

Commanded by my son, how did the Kalinga, the leader of an army, take on Bhimasena, mighty in strength and wondrous in his deeds —

Note on the text: Corrected कलिङ्गोः → कलिङ्गो (misprint in Wikisource; stray visarga, the critical edition reads kaliṅgo). Matches the critical edition's 6.50.1 (मम पुत्रसमादिष्टः for tathā pratisamādiṣṭaḥ kept as a variant); Wikisource's adhyaya 54 is the critical edition's adhyaya 6.50 (the unmatched 6.49.39–40 in the alignment belong to the preceding Wikisource adhyaya). From verse 7 to verse 39, and again in verses 44–50, 52–74, 80–88 and 122–123, the page's verse divisions run half a verse out of step with the critical edition's (the page's own verse-end marks are followed); each such verse is cited by the critical-edition verse of its first line. The critical edition's star passages *0169, *0170, *0171, *0173, *0174, *0175, *0177, *0178, *0179, *0180, *0181 and *0183 in this adhyaya are not on the page and were not added.

Verse 2 (6.54.2)

चरन्तं गदया वीर दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम् । योधयामास समरे कलिङ्गः सह सेनया ॥

carantaṃ gadayā vīra daṇḍahastamivāntakam | yodhayāmāsa samare kaliṅgaḥ saha senayā

— Bhima, ranging over the field with his mace like Death with his staff in hand? How, valiant one, did the Kalinga fight him in battle together with his army?

putreṇa tava rājendra sa tathokto mahābalaḥ | mahatyā senayā guptaḥ prāyādbhīmarathaṃ prati

O king of kings, thus addressed by your son, the mighty Kalinga, guarded by a great army, advanced towards Bhima's chariot.

Verse 4 (6.54.4)

With many thousands of Kalinga chariots, lord of men, and ten thousand elephants, Ketumat with his Nishadas

Note on the text: Corrected निषादैःक → निषादैः (misprint in Wikisource; stray क). The automatic alignment missed this verse: it is the critical edition's 6.50.7ab–cd (नराधिप for janādhipaḥ); the page's division runs half a verse ahead of the critical edition's from here, so 6.50.7ef begins the next verse.
