The Eagle and the Half-Moon: the Arrays of the Third Day

At dawn on the third day Bhishma draws up the Kaurava army in the great Garuda (eagle) array, himself at the beak, Drona and Kritavarman as the eyes, Ashvatthama and Kripa at the head, Duryodhana at the back and other kings at the neck, tail and wings. Arjuna and Dhrishtadyumna answer with the half-moon array, Bhima on the right horn, Yudhishthira and the Panchalas in the centre and Arjuna, guarded by Krishna, on the left horn. The battle begins, with chariots and elephants entangled and the din of drums rising to the sky.
