Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 85

Yudhishthira Rebukes Shikhandin; Bhima Smashes Chitrasena's Chariot

Surrounded by the Trigarta princes, Arjuna cuts their bows, kills them and their thirty-two rear-guards, and pushes on toward Bhishma, brushing aside Duryodhana and Jayadratha. Yudhishthira, seeing Shikhandin's weapons cut by Bhishma, reproaches him for leaving his vow to kill Bhishma unfulfilled; stung, Shikhandin charges, holds off Shalya's weapon and answers it with the Varuna weapon. Bhishma cuts Yudhishthira's bow and banner, and Bhima, on foot with his mace, kills Jayadratha's horses and then shatters Chitrasena's chariot, while Chitrasena leaps clear and the Kauravas cheer his courage.

Verse 1 (6.85.1)

sa tāḍyamānastu śarairdhanaṃjayaḥ | padāhato nāga iva śvasanbalī | bāṇāṃśca bāṇena mahārathānāṃ | ciccheda cāpāni raṇe prasahya

Struck by their arrows, mighty Dhananjaya, hissing like a serpent trodden underfoot, cut with his arrows the arrows and bows of those great chariot-fighters in battle, overpowering them.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, rows 6-85-1 to 6-85-40 under one सञ्जय उवाच heading, ending with its colophon naming this the 85th adhyaya, on the seventh day of battle). The page prints each line of these trishtubh verses on its own row line, and its numbering goes astray in two ways: rows 6-85-12f, 14f, 28f and 38f carry only the last line of a six-line verse (their lost lines are restored from the critical edition, see verses 12, 14, 28 and 38), and verse 37 is printed as two rows, both numbered 37 (one with line a alone, the next with lines labelled a, c, d), which are joined here, so the 41 input rows give 40 verses. Wikisource divides the critical edition's six-line verses 6.81.5 and 6.81.10 into couplets of four lines, so verses 5–11 here run half a verse behind it; verses 13 and 35 are the critical edition's star passages *0329 and *0331. This verse: ताड्यमानस्तु (tudyamānas) and बाणांश्च बाणेन (bāṇena bāṇena) kept as variants.

Verse 2 (6.85.2)

saṃchidya cāpāni ca tāni rājñāṃ | teṣāṃ raṇe vīryavatāṃ kṣaṇena | vivyādha bāṇairyugapanmahātmā | niḥśeṣatāṃ teṣvatha manyamānaḥ

Having cut the bows of those valiant kings in an instant in the battle, the great-souled one pierced them all at once with arrows, resolved to leave none of them alive.

Verse 3 (6.85.3)

nipeturājau rudhirapradigdhā- | ste tāḍitāḥ śakrasutena rājan | vibhinnagātrāḥ patitottamāṅgā | gatāsavaśchinnatanutrakāyāḥ

Struck by the son of Shakra, O king, they fell in the fight smeared with blood, their limbs torn, their heads fallen, their lives gone, their armour and bodies hacked.

Note on the text: Corrected छिन्नतनुक्रकायाः → छिन्नतनुत्रकायाः (misprint in Wikisource; क्र for त्र, tanutra "armour", critical edition chinnatanutrakāyāḥ).

Verse 4 (6.85.4)

mahīṃ gatāḥ pārthabalābhibhūtā | vicitrarūpā yugapadvineśuḥ | dṛṣṭvā hatāṃstānyudhi rājaputrāṃ- | strigartarājaḥ prayayau rathena

Overwhelmed by Partha's might they fell to the ground and perished together in many strange shapes. Seeing those princes slain in battle, the king of the Trigartas advanced on his chariot.

Note on the text: Corrected पर्थबलाभिभूता → पार्थबलाभिभूता (misprint in Wikisource; dropped ā sign, critical edition pārthabalābhibhūtā). रथेन for kṣaṇena kept as a variant.

Verse 5 (6.85.5)

teṣāṃ rathānāmatha pṛṣṭhagopā | dvātriṃśadanye'bhyapatanta pārtham | tathaiva te taṃ parivārya pārthaṃ | vikṛṣya cāpāni mahāravāṇi

Then thirty-two others, the rear-guards of those chariots, fell upon Partha. Surrounding Partha in the same way and drawing their loud-twanging bows,

Note on the text: Lines 1–4 are the critical edition's 6.81.5ab and cd (ते तं परिवार्य for te saṃparivārya kept as a variant); the automatic alignment found no match because the critical edition's verse has six lines.

Verse 6 (6.85.6)

avīvṛṣanbāṇamahaughavṛṣṭyā | yathā giriṃ toyadharā jalaughaiḥ | saṃpīḍyamānastu śaraughavṛṣṭyā | dhanaṃjayastānyudhi jātaroṣaḥ

they rained on him a great flood of arrows, as clouds pour torrents on a mountain. Hard pressed by that storm of arrows, Dhananjaya grew angry in the fight,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.81.5ef; lines 3–4 are 6.81.6ab.

Verse 7 (6.85.7)

ṣaṣṭyā śaraiḥ saṃyati tailadhautai- | rjaghāna tānapyatha pṛṣṭhagopān | rathāṃśca tānavajitya saṅkhye | dhanañjayaḥ prītamanā yaśasvī

and with sixty oil-cleaned arrows he slew those rear-guards in the battle too. Having conquered those chariot-fighters in the fight, glorious Dhananjaya, glad at heart,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.81.6cd; lines 3–4 are 6.81.7ab (रथांश्च for ṣaṣṭiṃ rathāṃs kept as a variant). Corrected तांस्तनवजित्य → तानवजित्य (misprint in Wikisource; तांस्तन gives no word and makes the line a syllable too long, critical edition tān avajitya).

Verse 8 (6.85.8)

athātvaradbhīṣmavadhāya jiṣṇu- | rbalāni rājansamare nihatya | trigartarājo nihatānsamīkṣya | mahātmanā tānatha bandhuvargān

Jishnu, having slaughtered the forces in battle, O king, hastened on to slay Bhishma. The king of the Trigartas, seeing his kinsmen slain by that great-souled warrior,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.81.7cd (राजन् for rājñāṃ); lines 3–4 are 6.81.8ab (महात्मना for mahārathāṃs). Both kept as variants.

Verse 9 (6.85.9)

raṇe puraskṛtya narādhipāṃstān | jagāma pārthaṃ tvarito vadhāya | abhidrutaṃ cāstrabhṛtāṃ variṣṭhaṃ | dhanaṃjayaṃ vīkṣya śikhaṇḍimukhyāḥ

and, putting those rulers of men in front, went swiftly against Partha to kill him. Seeing Dhananjaya, best of those who bear arms, under attack, the warriors led by Shikhandin

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.81.8cd; lines 3–4 are 6.81.9ab.

Verse 10 (6.85.10)

abhyudyayuste śitaśastrahastā | rirakṣiṣanto rathamarjunasya | pārtho'pi tānāpatataḥ samīkṣya | trigartarājñā sahitānnṛvīrān

rushed up with sharp weapons in hand, eager to protect Arjuna's chariot. Partha too, seeing those heroes coming on together with the king of the Trigartas,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 6.81.9cd; lines 3–4 are 6.81.10ab. Corrected अभ्यद्ययुस्ते → अभ्युद्ययुस्ते (misprint in Wikisource; अ for उ, critical edition abhyudyayus te) and नृवीरान → नृवीरान् (misprint; missing virama).

Verse 11 (6.85.11)

vidhvaṃsayitvā samare dhanuṣmān | gāṇḍīvamuktairniśitaiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ | bhīṣmaṃ yiyāsuryudhi saṃdadarśa | duryodhanaṃ saindhavādīṃśca rājñaḥ

the bowman crushed them in battle with sharp arrows shot from Gandiva and, eager to reach Bhishma, saw before him in the fight Duryodhana and the kings led by the ruler of Sindhu.

Note on the text: Lines 1–4 are the critical edition's 6.81.10cd and ef.

Verse 12 (6.85.12)

āvārayiṣṇūnabhisaṃprayāya | muhūrtamāyodhya balena vīraḥ | utsṛjya rājānamanantavīryo | jayadrathādīṃśca nṛpānmahaujāḥ | yayau tato bhīmabalo manasvī | gāṅgeyamājau śaracāpapāṇiḥ

Advancing on those who sought to bar his way, the hero fought them hard for a moment; then, letting go the king and Jayadratha and the other rulers, he of boundless valour and great energy, mighty in strength and resolute, went on against the son of Ganga in the battle, arrows and bow in hand.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (6.81.11ab, cd, e): Wikisource prints only the last line of this verse, numbered 6-85-12f (गाङ्गेयमाजौ शरचापपाणिः), with its first five lines lost; the sense needs them, since the next lines have Arjuna already past Duryodhana and Jayadratha. Lines 1–5 are restored from the critical edition; line 6 is the page's own.

Verse 13 (6.85.13)

bhīṣmo'pi dṛṣṭvā samare kṛtāstrān | sa pāṇḍavānāṃ rathino'bhyudārān | vihāya saṃgrāmamukhe dhanaṃjayaṃ | javena pārthaṃ punarājagāma

Bhishma too, seeing the Pandavas' noble chariot-fighters, skilled in arms, in the battle, left Dhananjaya at the front of the fight and came swiftly back to face the son of Pritha.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 6.81.11f*0329.

Verse 14 (6.85.14)

Yudhishthira, great-souled and fierce in strength, came up swiftly, his anger roused. Leaving the lord of the Madras, the opponent allotted to him in the battle, he of endless fame, together with the sons of Madri and Bhimasena, went against Bhishma, son of Shantanu, to fight.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (6.81.12ab, cd, e): Wikisource prints only the last line of this verse, numbered 6-85-14f (र्भीष्मं ययौ शान्तनवं रणाय, whose opening र् is the end of भीमसेनैः), with its first five lines lost, which leaves it without a subject. Lines 1–5 are restored from the critical edition; line 6 is the page's own.

Verse 15 (6.85.15)

taiḥ saṃprayuktaiḥ sa mahārathāgryai- | rgaṅgāsutaḥ samare citrayodhī | na vivyadhe śāntanavo mahātmā | samāgataiḥ pāṇḍusutaiḥ samastaiḥ

Set upon by those foremost of great chariot-fighters, Ganga's son, the great-souled son of Shantanu, a wondrous fighter, was not wounded in battle by all the sons of Pandu gathered together.

Note on the text: संप्रयुक्तैः (for saṃprayuktaḥ) and विव्यधे (for vivyathe) kept as variants.

Verse 16 (6.85.16)

athaitya rājā yudhi satyasandho | jayadratho'tyugrabalo manasvī | ciccheda cāpāni mahārathānāṃ | prasahya teṣāṃ dhanuṣā vareṇa

Then King Jayadratha, true to his word in battle, of very fierce strength and high spirit, came up and by main force cut the bows of those great chariot-fighters with his excellent bow.

Verse 17 (6.85.17)

Great-souled Duryodhana, his anger roused in the battle, his wrath like venom, struck Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, the twins, Partha and Krishna with arrows that blazed like fire.

Note on the text: Corrected दुर्योदनः → दुर्योधनः (misprint in Wikisource; द for ध, critical edition duryodhanaḥ). कृष्णं for tathā kept as a variant.

Verse 18 (6.85.18)

kṛpeṇa śalyena śalena caiva | tathā vibho citrasenena cājau | viddhāḥ śaraiste'tivivṛddhakopai- | rdevā yathā daityagaṇaiḥ sametaiḥ

Pierced in the fight, my lord, with arrows by Kripa, Shalya, Shala and Chitrasena, whose anger had risen high, they were like the gods assailed by the gathered hosts of the Daityas.

Note on the text: Corrected चौजौ → चाजौ (misprint in Wikisource; औ for आ, critical edition cājau).

Verse 19 (6.85.19)

Yet you are not making it come true, since you do not kill Devavrata in battle. Do not be false to your vow here, hero; guard your duty, your family and your fame.

Note on the text: Yudhishthira's speech to Shikhandin (verses 20–25); the page prints no heading, and the verse is given to him. त्वया च नैनां, मात्र (mā atra) and स्वकुलं kept as variants of tvayā na caināṃ, mā nṛvīra and ca kulaṃ.

Look at Bhishma, terrible in his speed in battle, scorching all the hosts of my army in an instant with nets of arrows of fierce speed, like Death appointed by Time.

Note on the text: Yudhishthira's speech to Shikhandin (verses 20–25); the page prints no heading, and the verse is given to him.

Verse 23 (6.85.23)

nikṛttacāpaḥ samare'napekṣaḥ | parājitaḥ śāntanavena cājau | vihāya bandhūnatha sodarāṃśca | kva yāsyase nānurūpaṃ tavedam

Your bow cut, careless of the fight, beaten in battle by the son of Shantanu, where will you go, leaving your kinsmen and your brothers? This is not worthy of you.

Note on the text: Yudhishthira's speech to Shikhandin (verses 20–25); the page prints no heading, and the verse is given to him. Corrected सदरांश्च → सोदरांश्च (misprint in Wikisource; dropped o sign, critical edition sodarāṃś ca). समरेऽनपेक्षः and चाजौ kept as variants.

Verse 27 (6.85.27)

tamāpatantaṃ mahatā javena | śikhaṇḍinaṃ bhīṣmamabhidravantam | nivārayāmāsa hi śalya ena- | mastreṇa ghoreṇa sudurjayena

As Shikhandin came on with great speed, charging at Bhishma, Shalya checked him with a terrible weapon, very hard to overcome.

Verse 28 (6.85.28)

But the son of Drupada, whose might matched great Indra's, seeing that weapon unleashed with power like the fire at the end of an age, was not confounded, O king. The great bowman stood his ground right there, holding off that weapon with his arrows.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (6.81.26ab, cd and 6.81.27a): Wikisource prints only the last line of this verse, numbered 6-85-28f (शरैस्तदस्त्रं प्रतिबाधमानः), with its first five lines lost, which leaves it without a subject or verb. Then Shikhandin took up another weapon, the fierce Varuna weapon, to counter it. The gods standing in the sky and the kings saw that weapon split apart by the other.

Note on the text: Lines 1–4 are the critical edition's 6.81.27cd and ef (प्रतिघातमस्य for pratighātāya tasya kept as a variant). Corrected शिखण्ड्यथोऽग्रं → शिखण्ड्यथोग्रं (misprint in Wikisource; a stray avagraha, the words are atha ugram, critical edition athograṃ).

Bhishma, the great-souled hero, O king, cut in battle the bright bow and the banner of the son of Pandu, King Yudhishthira of Ajamidha's line, and roared.

Verse 31 (6.85.31)

Then, seeing Yudhishthira overcome by fear, Bhimasena threw aside his bow and arrows, took up a mace and, on foot, fell upon Jayadratha in the battle.

Verse 32 (6.85.32)

tamāpatantaṃ sahasā javena | jayadrathaḥ sagadaṃ bhīmasenam | vivyādha ghorairyamadaṇḍakalpaiḥ | śitaiḥ śaraiḥ pañcaśataiḥ samantāt

As Bhimasena, mace in hand, rushed at him suddenly and at speed, Jayadratha pierced him all over with five hundred sharp, terrible arrows like the rod of Yama.

Note on the text: Corrected पञ्चशरैः → पञ्चशतैः (misprint in Wikisource; र for त, "five-arrows" after शरैः gives no sense, critical edition pañcaśataiḥ, "five hundred"). सहसा for mahatā kept as a variant.

Verse 33 (6.85.33)

acintayitvā sa śarāṃstarasvī | vṛkodaraḥ krodhaparītacetāḥ | jaghāna vāhānsamare samantāt | susaṃmatānsindhurājasya saṅkhye

Paying no heed to those arrows, the impetuous Vrikodara, his mind seized by rage, killed the Sindhu king's prized horses all around in the battle.

Note on the text: समन्तात् and सुसंमतान् (for samastān āraṭṭajān) kept as variants.

Verse 34 (6.85.34)

tato'bhivīkṣyāpratimaprabhāva- | stavātmajastvaramāṇo rathena | abhyāyayau bhīmasenaṃ nihantuṃ | samudyatāstraḥ surarājakalpaḥ

Then, seeing this, your son of matchless power came on swiftly in his chariot to kill Bhimasena, weapon raised, like the king of the gods.

Note on the text: Corrected अभ्यायौ → अभ्याययौ (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped syllable, आयौ is not a verb form and the line is a syllable short, critical edition abhyāyayau).

Verse 35 (6.85.35)

jayadratho bhagnavāhaṃ rathaṃ taṃ | tyaktvā yayau yatra rājā kurūṇām | bhayena bhīmasya samūḍhacetāḥ | sasaubalastatra yuddhasya bhītaḥ

Jayadratha, his mind confounded by fear of Bhima, abandoned that chariot with its horses destroyed and, afraid of the fighting there, went with Subala's son to where the king of the Kurus was.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 6.81.32d*0331. Corrected भग्रवाहं → भग्नवाहं (misprint in Wikisource; र for न) and रथं त → रथं तं (misprint; dropped anusvara), both as in the apparatus (bhagnavāhaṃ rathaṃ taṃ). समूढचेताः for sa mūḍhacetāḥ kept as a variant.

Verse 36 (6.85.36)

bhīmo'pyathainaṃ sahasā vinadya | pratyudyayau gadayā tarjayānaḥ | samudyatāṃ tāṃ yamadaṇḍakalpāṃ | dṛṣṭvā gadāṃ te kuravaḥ samantāt

Bhima, with a sudden roar, went out to meet him, threatening him with his mace. Seeing that mace raised like Yama's rod, the Kurus on every side,

Note on the text: तर्जयानः (for tarjamānaḥ) kept as an epic variant.

Verse 37 (6.85.37)

vihāya sarve tava putramugraṃ | pātaṃ gadāyāḥ parihartukāmāḥ | apakrāntāstumule saṃpramarde | sudāruṇe bhārata mohanīye

all wishing to escape the fall of the mace, abandoned your fierce son and fled from that tumultuous, dreadful and bewildering mêlée, O Bharata.

Note on the text: Joined from two rows of the page, both numbered 37 (6-85-37a with line 1 alone, and a second row labelled 37a, c, d with lines 2–4); together they make the critical edition's single verse 6.81.34, and the input's ॥ after line 1 is removed. Corrected पुत्रमुग्नं → पुत्रमुग्रं (misprint in Wikisource; ग्न for ग्र, critical edition putram ugraṃ) and सुदूरुणे → सुदारुणे (misprint; ū for ā, critical edition sudāruṇe). संप्रमर्दे for saṃvimarde kept as a variant.

Verse 38 (6.85.38)

amūḍhacetāstvatha citraseno | mahāgadāmāpatantīṃ nirīkṣya | rathaṃ samutsṛjya padātirājau | pragṛhya khaḍgaṃ vimalaṃ ca carma | avaplutaḥ siṃha ivācalāgrā- | jjagāma cānyaṃ bhuvi bhūmideśam

But Chitrasena, his mind undismayed, seeing the great mace coming at him, left his chariot and, on foot in the battle, taking up a gleaming sword and shield, leapt down like a lion from a mountain peak and went to another spot on the ground.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (6.81.35ab, cd, e and f): Wikisource prints only the last line of this verse, numbered 6-85-38f (ज्जगामान्यं भ्रमप भूमिदेशम्, whose opening ज् is the end of इवाचलाग्रात्), with its first five lines lost, which leaves it without a subject. Lines 1–5 are restored from the critical edition. The surviving line is itself corrupt (भ्रमप is not a word, and जगामान्यं भ्रमप does not scan), so after the page's ज्जगाम it follows the critical edition (cānyaṃ bhuvi bhūmideśam).

Verse 39 (6.85.39)

gadāpi sā prāpya rathaṃ sucitraṃ | sāśvaṃ sasūtaṃ vinihatya saṅkhye | jagāma bhūmiṃ jvalitā maholkā | bhraṣṭā'mbarādgāmiva saṃpatantī

The mace struck that splendid chariot and, destroying it in the battle together with its horses and driver, fell to the earth blazing, like a great meteor dropping from the sky to the ground.

Note on the text: Corrected साश्व → साश्वं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped anusvara, critical edition sāśvaṃ) and महोल्क → महोल्का (misprint; dropped ā sign, the feminine agrees with गदा, critical edition maholkā).

Verse 40 (6.85.40)

āścaryabhūtaṃ sumahattvadīyā | dṛṣṭvaiva tadbhārata saṃprahṛṣṭāḥ | sarve vineduḥ sahitāḥ samantā- | tpupūjire tava putrasya śauryam

Seeing that great wonder, O Bharata, your men were overjoyed; all of them roared together on every side and praised your son's valour.

Note on the text: तव पुत्रस्य शौर्यम् for tava putraṃ sasainyāḥ kept as a variant.
