Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 99
The Sarvatobhadra Array and the Omens of the Ninth Day
Bhishma marches out and draws up the great Sarvatobhadra array: Kripa, Kritavarman, Shaibya, Shakuni, the king of Sindhu and Sudakshina stand at its head with Bhishma and Dhritarashtra's sons, Drona, Bhurishravas, Shalya and Bhagadatta hold the right wing, Ashvatthaman, Somadatta and the two Avanti princes the left, Duryodhana with the Trigartas the centre, and Alambusha and Shrutayus the rear. The Pandavas form their counter-array with Yudhishthira, Bhima and the twins in front, and both hosts charge amid the din of drums and conches. Dreadful portents follow, from howling jackals and showers of dust, blood and bones to meteors striking the sun, as the two armies close.
