Both Armies Light Torches in the Dark

In the dust and darkness of the fourteenth night the warriors cannot see one another and cut each other down. Dhritarashtra asks how light came to the armies. Sanjaya tells how Duryodhana ordered his foot-soldiers to take up torches, how the Pandavas did the same, and how the gods and heavenly beings joined in. Lit by countless lamps, the field shone like heaven, and Drona blazed at its centre like the sun.

As that dreadful, terrifying battle went on, O lord of the earth, with the world shrouded in darkness and dust,

Note on the text: Corrected तत्संप्रदीप्तां → तत्संप्रदीप्तं (misprint in Wikisource; the feminine ending does not agree with बलम्; the critical edition reads tat saṃpradīptaṃ). Note on the text: Lines 1–2 = CE 7.138.26a; line 3 = the first half of CE 26c (repeated as the first half of 27c); line 4 = the second half of CE 27c (vyadīpayan pāṇḍusutasya senām). Low match is due to this recombination of CE lines.

Verse 31 (7.164.31)

मध्ये तथाऽन्ये ज्वलिताग्निहस्ताः । सेनाद्वयेऽपि स्म नरा विचेरुः ॥

madhye tathā'nye jvalitāgnihastāḥ | senādvaye'pi sma narā viceruḥ

Note on the text: Changed प्रदीप्ता-- । / स्तथा → प्रदीप्ताः । / तथा (the page splits the sandhi प्रदीप्तास्तथा across lines with a double hyphen (--); written here with the word-final visarga resolved). Verse 35 (7.164.35)

Note on the text: Changed आरुहद्भि-- । / रायोधनं → आरुहद्भिः । / आयोधनं (the page splits the sandhi आरुहद्भिरायोधनं across lines with a double hyphen (--); written here with the word-final visarga resolved, CE āruhadbhir; āyodhanaṃ). That great army, lit by torches, crowded with chariots, horses and elephants, its warriors enraged, its horses slain and fled, drawn up with chariots, horses and elephants, became like the ranked hosts of the gods and Asuras.

Verse 38 (7.164.38)

tacchaktisaṅghākulacaṇḍavātaṃ | mahārathābhraṃ gajavājighoṣam | śastraugavarṣaṃ rudhirāmbudhāraṃ | niśi pravṛttaṃ rathadurdinaṃ tat

That night battle became a storm of chariots: the clustered spears were its raging wind, the great chariot-warriors its clouds, the din of elephants and horses its thunder, the showers of weapons its rain, and streams of blood its water.

Note on the text: Removed a stray zero-width joiner inside चण्डवातं. Line 2 reads गजवाजिघोषम् where CE has rathavājighoṣam, and line 4 reads रथदुर्दिनं तत् where CE has naradevayuddham (recension variants, kept).

Verse 39 (7.164.39)

तस्मिन्महाग्निप्रतिमो महात्मा । सन्तापयन्पाण्डवान्विप्रमुख्यः । गभस्तिभिर्मध्यगतो यथाऽर्को । वर्षात्यये तद्वदभून्नरेन्द्र ॥

tasminmahāgnipratimo mahātmā | santāpayanpāṇḍavānvipramukhyaḥ | gabhastibhirmadhyagato yathā'rko | varṣātyaye tadvadabhūnnarendra

In it the great-souled Drona, best of brahmins, blazing like a mighty fire and tormenting the Pandavas, stood at the centre like the sun with its rays at the end of the rains, O lord of men.

Note on the text: Corrected सन्तापंयन् → सन्तापयन् (misprint in Wikisource; a stray anusvara; the critical edition reads saṃtāpayan).
