The Narayana Weapon Is Quelled; Drona's Son Drives Back the Panchalas

Arjuna covers Bhima with the Varuna weapon, and Krishna and Arjuna drag Bhima from his chariot and make him lay down his arms, so that the Narayana weapon dies down. Duryodhana urges Ashvatthama to use it again, but he says it cannot be used twice. Ashvatthama then fights Dhrishtadyumna and Satyaki, kills the Paurava, Sudarshana the Malava and the Chedi prince as the five Pandava warriors close in, and duels with Bhima until Bhima's charioteer faints and his horses carry him away. The Panchalas and Bhima flee before Drona's son.

Verse 1 (7.201.1)

bhīmasenaṃ samākīrṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā'streṇa dhanañjayaḥ | tejasaḥ pratighātārthaṃ vāruṇena samāvṛṇot

Seeing Bhimasena enveloped by the weapon, Dhananjaya covered him with the Varuna weapon, in order to check its fiery power.

Note on the text: The page's speaker heading reads "सञ्जय उवाय" (misprint for उवाच); the input had it inside the verse text, so it is removed from the Sanskrit and made the speaker (Sanjaya), as for verses 1–20 (the next printed heading is at verse 21).

Verse 2 (7.201.2)

nālakṣayata tatkaścidvāruṇāstreṇa saṃvṛtam | arjunasya laghutvācca saṃvṛtatvācca tejasaḥ

No one could make him out, covered as he was by the Varuna weapon, both because Arjuna was so swift and because the fire itself was enclosed.

Verse 3 (7.201.3)

sāśvasūtaratho bhīmo droṇaputrāstrasaṃvṛtaḥ | agnāvagniriva nyasto jvālāmālī sudurdṛśaḥ

Bhima, with his horses, charioteer and chariot, enveloped by the weapon of Drona's son, looked like fire placed within fire, wreathed in flames and terrible to behold.

Verse 4 (7.201.4)

yathā rātrikṣaye rājañjyotīṣyastagiriṃ prati | samāpetustathā bāṇā bhīmasenarathaṃ prati

As the stars, O king, fall toward the mountain of the setting sun at the end of night, so the arrows fell upon Bhimasena's chariot.

Verse 5 (7.201.5)

sa hi bhīmo rathaścāsya hayāḥ sūtaśca māriṣa | saṃvṛtā droṇaputreṇa pāvakāntargatā'bhavan

Bhima himself, and his chariot, his horses and his charioteer, O sire, were enveloped by Drona's son and had gone into the midst of the fire.

Verse 6 (7.201.6)

yathā jagdhvā jagatkṛtsnaṃ samaye sacarācaram | gacchedvahnirvibhorāsyaṃ tathā'straṃ bhīmamāvṛṇot

As fire, when it has consumed the whole world with all that moves and stands still at the appointed time, goes into the mouth of the all-pervading Lord, so the weapon enveloped Bhima.

Verse 7 (7.201.7)

sūryamagniḥ praviṣṭaḥ syādyathā cāgniṃ divākaraḥ | tathā praviṣṭaṃ tattejo na ājñāyata pāṇḍavaḥ

As if fire had entered the sun, or the sun had entered fire, so that blaze entered him, and the Pandava could no longer be made out.

Note on the text: Line 2 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.7c (CE "na prājñāyata kiṃ cana").

Verse 8 (7.201.8)

tadastraṃ bhīmahuṅkārādapayāti punaḥpunaḥ | punaḥ punastamāyāti huṃkārāttaṃ vimuñcati | tato devāḥ sagandharvā bhīmaṃ dṛṣṭvā suvismitāḥ

At Bhima's roar that weapon would draw back again and again; again and again it came at him, and at his roar it let him go. Then the gods and the gandharvas, seeing Bhima, were filled with wonder.

Note on the text: Removed the wiki backtick and closing apostrophe that mark a vulgate insertion. Not in the critical edition's main text: the three lines are the CE star passage 7.171.7d*1408_01–03 (after 7.171.7).

Verse 9 (7.201.9)

vikīrṇamastraṃ taddṛṣṭvā tathā bhīmarathaṃ prati | udīryamāṇaṃ drauṇiṃ ca niṣpratidvandvamāhave

Seeing that weapon spread out toward Bhima's chariot, and Drona's son rising up in battle with no rival to face him,

Verse 10 (7.201.10)

sarvasainyaṃ ca pāṇḍūnāṃ nyastaśastramacetanam | yudhiṣṭhirapurogāṃśca vimukhāṃstānmahārathān

the whole army of the Pandavas, its weapons laid down and its senses gone, and those great chariot-warriors led by Yudhishthira, all turned away.

Note on the text: Corrected महारथनान् → महारथान् (misprint in Wikisource; stray न, CE mahārathān). Line 1 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.9a (CE has the plural सैन्यानि).

Verse 11 (7.201.11)

arjuno vāsudevaśca tvaramāṇau mahādyutī | avaplutya rathādvīrau bhīmamādravatāṃ tataḥ

Then Arjuna and Vasudeva, both of great splendour, hurried; the two heroes leapt down from their chariot and ran to Bhima.

Verse 12 (7.201.12)

tatastaddroṇaputrasya tejo'strabalasambhavam | vigāhya tau subalinau māyayā'viśatāṃ tathā

Then those two exceedingly mighty ones plunged into that blaze, born of the power of the weapon of Drona's son, and entered it by their power of illusion.

Verse 13 (7.201.13)

nyastaśastrau tatastau tu nādahatso'strajo'nalaḥ | vāruṇāstraprayogācca vīryavattvācca kṛṣṇayoḥ

With their weapons laid down, the fire born of the weapon did not burn the two of them, because of the use of the Varuna weapon and because of the great power of the two Krishnas.

Verse 14 (7.201.14)

tataścakṛṣaturbhīmaṃ sarvaśastrāyudhāni ca | nārāyaṇāstraśāntyarthaṃ naranārāyaṇau balāt

Then Nara and Narayana, to quell the Narayana weapon, dragged Bhima away by force, and all his weapons and arms with him.

Verse 15 (7.201.15)

ākṛṣyamāṇaḥ kaunteyo nadatyeva mahāravam | vardhate caiva tadghoraṃ drauṇerastraṃ sudurjayam

As he was dragged, the son of Kunti kept roaring mightily, and that terrible weapon of Drona's son, so hard to conquer, grew all the stronger.

Note on the text: Corrected तद्वोरं → तद्घोरं (misprint in Wikisource; व for घ, CE tad ghoraṃ). Line 1 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.14a (CE "mahārathaḥ" for the page's "महारवम्").

Verse 16 (7.201.16)

tamabravīdvāsudevaḥ kimidaṃ pāṇḍunandana | vāryamāṇo'pi kaunteya yadyuddhānna nivartase

Vasudeva said to him, "What is this, son of Pandu? Though you are being held back, son of Kunti, you do not turn away from the fight.

Note on the text: Corrected यद्युद्वान्न → यद्युद्धान्न (misprint in Wikisource; व for ध, CE yuddhān na). Line 1 introduces the speaker (Sanjaya narrates); the question is Vasudeva's.

Vasudeva (Krishna) said

Verse 17 (7.201.17)

yadi yuddhena jeyāḥ syurime kauravanandanāḥ | vayamapyatra yudhyema tathā ceme nararṣabhāḥ

If these sons of the Kurus could be conquered by fighting, we too would fight here, and so would these bulls among men.

Note on the text: Corrected युद्वेन → युद्धेन (misprint in Wikisource; व for ध, CE yuddhena). No speaker heading is printed; the speech is Vasudeva's, continuing from verse 16.

Verse 18 (7.201.18)

rathebhyastvavatīrṇāḥ sma sarva eva hi tāvakāḥ | tasmāttvamapi kaunteya rathāttūrṇamapākrama

But all of your own side have got down from their chariots. Therefore you too, son of Kunti, step quickly down from your chariot."

Note on the text: No speaker heading is printed; the speech is Vasudeva's. Line 1 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.17a (CE "avatīrṇās tu sarva eva sma tāvakāḥ" differs slightly in word order and particles).

evamuktvā tu taṃ kṛṣṇo rathādbhūmimavartayat | niḥśvasantaṃ yathā nāgaṃ krodhasaṃraktalocanam

Having said this, Krishna brought him down from the chariot to the ground, as he sighed like a serpent, his eyes red with rage.

Note on the text: Line 1 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.18a (page "रथाद्भूमिमवर्तयत्", CE "rathād bhūmim apātayat").

Verse 20 (7.201.20)

When he had been dragged from the chariot and made to lay his weapon on the ground, that Narayana weapon, tormentor of foes, was quelled.

Verse 21 (7.201.21)

tasminpraśānte vidhinā tena tejasi duḥsahe | babhūvurvimalāḥ sarvā diśaḥ pradiśa eva ca

When that unbearable fire had been quelled in due manner, all the quarters and intermediate quarters became clear.

Verse 22 (7.201.22)

pravavuśca śivā vātāḥ praśāntā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ | vāhanāni ca hṛṣṭāni praśānte'stre sudurjaye

Auspicious winds blew, the beasts and birds grew calm, and the mounts were glad when the weapon, so hard to overcome, was stilled.

Note on the text: Low CE match is a recension variant: CE 7.171.21c reads "vāhanāni ca hṛṣṭāni yodhāś ca manujeśvara"; this text has "प्रशान्तेऽस्त्रे सुदुर्जये".

Verse 23 (7.201.23)

vyapoḍhe ca tato ghore tasmiṃstejasi bhārata | babhau bhīmo niśāpāye dhīmānsūrya ivoditaḥ

And when that terrible blaze, O Bharata, had been drawn off, wise Bhima shone like the risen sun at the end of night.

Verse 24 (7.201.24)

hataśeṣaṃ balaṃ tattu pāṇḍavānāmatiṣṭhata | astravyuparamādvṛṣṭaṃ tava putrajighāṃsayā

What remained of the Pandava force after the slaughter stood firm; with the weapon stilled it was cheered, and eager to kill your sons.

"This weapon does not come round again, O king; it cannot be used a second time. If it were turned back and sent again, it would, without doubt, return upon the one who sent it.

Note on the text: Corrected आवृतं → आवृत्तं (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct त्त dropped: "turned back", as the sense requires). No speaker heading is printed; the speech (verses 28–32) is Ashvatthama's. Line 2 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.27c (CE "āvartayan nihanty etat").

vyaśvasūtarathaṃ cainaṃ drauṇiścakre mahāhave | tasya cānucarānsarvānkruddhaḥ prādrāvayaccharaiḥ

In that great battle Drona's son left him without horses, charioteer or chariot, and in his anger drove off all his followers with arrows.

Note on the text: Corrected महाहावे → महाहवे (misprint in Wikisource; stray ा, CE mahāhave). Line 2 is a recension variant of CE 7.171.43c (page "प्राद्रावयच्छरैः", CE "prācchādayac charaiḥ").

Verse 47 (7.201.47)

Then the army of the Panchalas fled, O lord of men, bewildered and afflicted, and the men did not look at one another.

Note on the text: Low CE match is a recension variant: CE 7.171.44c reads "saṃbhrāntarūpam ārtaṃ ca śaravarṣaparikṣatam"; this text has "न परस्परमैक्षत".

Verse 48 (7.201.48)

He afflicted Ashvatthama with eight sharp arrows; striking him again with twenty of various kinds, in his indignation, he pierced the charioteer too, and the four horses with four arrows.

Note on the text: Matches the critical edition's 7.171.46 (lines a, c, e; the page has the three lines as one verse). Line 3 is a recension variant ("नानारूपैरमर्षणः" for CE "nānārūpair amarṣaṇam"). The automatic alignment missed it because Appendix I passage 23 follows directly.

Intent on his task, with a practised hand he cut down his bow and banner; he also shattered his gold-adorned chariot with its horses, and struck him hard in the chest with thirty arrows.

Note on the text: Removed the stray opening bracket, asterisk and semicolon (the page brackets verses 50–63, 14 verses, as found only in one manuscript: "एतदादि 14 श्लोकाः झ. पुस्तक एव दृश्यन्ते").
