Jayadratha's Fear and Drona's Assurance

Hearing the Pandavas' roar, Jayadratha is shaken with fear and laments before the assembled kings, asking leave to flee. Duryodhana reassures him and names the champions who will guard him. Jayadratha then goes to Drona by night and asks how his skill compares with Arjuna's. Drona admits Arjuna is the better, but promises to protect him with an array Arjuna cannot cross, and reminds him that all must die and that a kshatriya who fights well wins the worlds of the ascetics.

Or else, bulls among the kshatriyas, if you are strong enough to match him and protect me, then, O heroes, grant me safety from the son of Pritha, who has set his heart on me.

Note on the text: Corrected अथवास्त्रप्रतिबलास्त्रात → अथवास्थ प्रतिबलास्त्रातुं (misprint in Wikisource; स्त्र for स्थ, and the infinitive त्रातुं cut short, the critical edition reads "atha vā stha pratibalās trātuṃ"). Line 2 ends ते सन्दत्त ममाभयम् where the critical edition has "te dadantu mamābhayam" (variant).
