Arjuna's Vow to Slay Jayadratha

Yudhishthira tells Arjuna how Abhimanyu broke into Drona's array, how Jayadratha held back the Pandavas, and how the boy, stripped of his chariot by six warriors, fell to Duhshasana's son in a club-duel. Arjuna faints, then rises in fury and swears to kill Jayadratha before the next sunset, calling down on himself the fates of a long list of sinners if he fails, and vowing to enter the fire if the sun sets first. Krishna and Arjuna blow their conches, the Pandavas roar, and Bhima rejoices, while the Kaurava army sinks into dismay.

Verse 1 (7.73.1)

tvayi yāte mahābāho saṃśaptakabalaṃ prati | prayatnamakarottīvramācāryo grahaṇe mama

O mighty-armed one, when you had gone off toward the host of the Samshaptakas, the Teacher made a fierce effort to take me captive.

Note on the text: Corrected प्रहणे → ग्रहणे (misprint in Wikisource; प for ग, the critical edition reads grahaṇe).

Verse 2 (7.73.2)

vyūḍhānīkaṃ tato droṇaṃ yatamānaṃ mahāmṛdhe | prativyūhya sahānīkāḥ pratyarudhma vayaṃ balāt

Then, as Drona strove in that great battle with his army drawn up in array, we, with our own troops, drew up a counter-array and by force held him back.

Note on the text: Recension variant of CE 7.51.2, whose two lines are worded differently there ("vyāḍhānīkaṃ vayaṃ droṇaṃ varayāmaḥ sma sarvaśaḥ / prativyūhya rathānīkaṃ yatamānaṃ tathā raṇe"); Wikisource's reading is kept.

Verse 3 (7.73.3)

sa vāryamāṇo rathibhirmayi cāpi surakṣite | asmānabhijagāmāśu pīḍayanniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

Though the chariot-fighters held him back, and though I too was well guarded, he swiftly came at us, tormenting us with sharp arrows.

Note on the text: Recension variant of CE 7.51.3: the second half of line 1 and the first half of line 2 are worded differently there ("rathibhī rakṣitena mayā tathā / asmān api jaghānāśu"); Wikisource's reading is kept.

Verse 4 (7.73.4)

Pressed hard by Drona, we could not even look at his army in the fight — how then could we break it?

Verse 5 (7.73.5)

tatastamapratirathamahaṃ saubhadramabravam | droṇānīkamidaṃ bhinddhi dvāraṃ sañjanayasva naḥ

Then I said to Saubhadra, who had no equal among chariot-fighters: "Break this army of Drona's, and make a gateway for us."

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; it appears there as star passage 7.51.5d*0355_01–02. The main text has a differently worded verse, 7.51.5 ("vayaṃ tv apratimaṃ vīrye sarve saubhadram ātmajam / uktavantaḥ sma te tāta bhindhy anīkam iti prabho").

Verse 6 (7.73.6)

sa tathā codito'smābhiḥ sadaśva iva vīryavān | asahyamapi taṃ bhāraṃ voḍhumevopacakrame

Urged on by us in this way, that valiant youth, like a good horse, set himself to bear even a burden that could not be borne.

Verse 7 (7.73.7)

sa tavāstropadeśena vīryeṇa ca samanvitaḥ | prāviśattadbalaṃ bālaḥ suparṇa iva sāgaram

Equipped with the instruction in weapons that you gave him, and with his own prowess, the boy plunged into that host as Suparna plunges into the sea.

Verse 8 (7.73.8)

We followed that hero, the son of the Satvata lady, into the battle, wishing to enter by the very path by which he had entered the host.

Verse 9 (7.73.9)

tataḥ saindhavako rājā kṣudrastāta jayadrathaḥ | varadānena rudrasya sarvānnaḥ samavārayat

Then, my dear, the wretched king of the Sindhus, Jayadratha, by Rudra's boon, held all of us back.

Verse 10 (7.73.10)

tato droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇo drauṇiḥ kausalya eva ca | kṛtavarmā ca saubhadraṃ ṣaḍrathāḥ paryavārayan

Then Drona, Kripa, Karna, Drona's son, the king of Kosala and Kritavarman — six chariot-warriors — surrounded Saubhadra.

Note on the text: Line 1 ends कौसल्य एव च (the king of Kosala, Brihadbala), where the critical edition has "sa bṛhadbalaḥ"; Wikisource's reading is kept.

Verse 11 (7.73.11)

parivārya tu taiḥ sarvairyudhi bālo mahārathaiḥ | yatamānaḥ paraṃ śaktyā bahubhirvirathīkṛtaḥ

Surrounded in battle by all those great chariot-warriors, the boy strove with all his strength, but the many robbed him of his chariot.

Verse 12 (7.73.12)

tato dauḥśāsaniḥ kṣipraṃ tathā tairvirathīkṛtam | saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ prāptaṃ padātinamavasthitam | gadāhasto'bhyayāttūrṇaṃ jighāṃsuraparājitam

Then Duhshasana's son, club in hand, swiftly came at the unconquered boy — whom they had thus robbed of his chariot, and who now stood on foot in the gravest danger — eager to kill him.

Note on the text: Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick). Line 1 is CE 7.51.12a. Line 2 corresponds to 12c, worded differently there ("saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ prāpya diṣṭāntenābhyayojayat"); Wikisource's reading is kept as a recension variant. Line 3 is the critical edition's star passage 7.51.12d*0356_01.

Verse 13 (7.73.13)

gadinaṃ tvatha taṃ dṛṣṭvā vāsavasyātmajātmajaḥ | sa jagrāha gadāṃ vīro gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ

But when Indra's grandson saw him with a club in his hand, that hero, skilled in club-fighting, took up a club himself.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.12d*0356_02–03.

gadāmaṇḍalamārgasthau sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ | tau samprajagmaturvīrāvanyonyasyāntaraiṣaṇau

Taking their places on the circling paths of club-fighting, in full view of all the kshatriyas, those two heroes closed with each other, each looking for an opening.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.12d*0356_04–05.

Verse 15 (7.73.15)

tāvanyonyaṃ gadāgrābhyāṃ tāḍitau yuddhadurmadau | indradhvajāvivotsṛṣṭau gatasatvau mahīṃgatau

Struck by each other with the tips of their clubs, the two, drunk with the fury of battle, fell to the ground with their strength gone, like two Indra-banners thrown down.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.12d*0356_06–07.

Verse 16 (7.73.16)

dauḥśāsanirathotthāya kurūṇāṃ kīrtivardhanaḥ | uttiṣṭhamānaṃ saubhadraṃ gadayā mūrdhnyatāḍayat

Then Duhshasana's son, the increaser of the Kurus' fame, rose up and struck Saubhadra, who was getting to his feet, on the head with his club.

Note on the text: Not at this place in the critical edition; the same lines occur in its account of Abhimanyu's fall at 7.48.12a and 12c (line 2 there reads "prottiṣṭhamānaṃ" for उत्तिष्ठमानं).

Verse 17 (7.73.17)

gadāvegena mahatā vyāyāmena ca mohitaḥ | vimanā nyapatadbhūmau saubhadraḥ paravīrahā

Dazed by the great force of the club and by the strain, Saubhadra, slayer of enemy heroes, lost his strength and fell to the ground.

Note on the text: Not at this place in the critical edition; the lines occur in its account of Abhimanyu's fall at 7.48.13a and 13c (line 2 there reads "vicetā" for विमना).

But before that he had killed thousands of elephants, horses, chariots and foot-soldiers, a hundred leading princes, and many heroes whom no one had marked.

Note on the text: Removed the stray wiki quote marks (apostrophe). Lines 1 and 2 are CE 7.51.13a and 13c; line 1 ends पत्तिनाम् where the critical edition has "sādinām" (variant).

that hero met his appointed end, leaving many kinsmen to mourn. And so, burning with grief, we have come together before you today.

Note on the text: Corrected वान्धवान् → बान्धवान् (misprint in Wikisource; व for ब, the critical edition reads bāndhavān). Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick and apostrophe). Note on the text: Corrected हन्ताऽजयद्रथम् → हन्ता जयद्रथम् (misprint in Wikisource; a stray avagraha and missing space make "ajayadratha", the critical edition and the refrain in the following verses read hantā jayadratham).

Note on the text: Corrected धान्यां → धन्यां (misprint in Wikisource; a stray ā-sign, the refrain reads "ced dhanyāṃ" (hanyām) as in the critical edition). Line 1 reads भर्तृनिन्दकः (reviler of his master) where the critical edition has "bhrātṛnindakaḥ" (variant).

Verse 44 (7.73.44)

bhuñjānānāṃ tu savyena utsaṅge cāpi khādatām | pālāśamāsanaṃ caiva tindukairdantadhāvanam

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 45 (7.73.45)

ye cāvarjayatāṃ lokāḥ svapatāṃ ca tathoṣasi | śītabhītāśca ye viprā raṇabhītāśca kṣatriyāḥ

the worlds of those who do not shun these things, and of those who sleep at dawn; of Brahmins who fear the cold and of kshatriyas who fear battle —

Note on the text: Line 2 corresponds to the critical edition's star passage 7.51.30f*0367_01 ("śītabhītāś ca ye viprā raṇabhītāś ca kṣatriyāḥ"); line 1 is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 46 (7.73.46)

ekakūpodakagrāme vedadhvanivivarjite | ṣaṇmāsaṃ tatra vasatāṃ tathā śāstraṃ vinindatām

of those who live for six months in a village with a single well, where no sound of the Veda is heard, and of those who revile the scriptures —

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 47 (7.73.47)

divāmaithunināṃ cāpi divaseṣu ca śerate | agāradāhināṃ caiva garadānāṃ ca ye matāḥ

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 48 (7.73.48)

agnyātithyavihīnāśca gopāneṣu ca vighnadāḥ | rajasvalāṃ sevayantaḥ kanyāṃ śulkena dāyinaḥ

of those without the fire-rite and hospitality, of those who obstruct people at the watering places of cattle, of those who consort with a menstruating woman, and of those who give away a maiden for a price —

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 49 (7.73.49)

yā ca vai bahuyājināṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ śvavṛttinām | āsyamaithunikānāṃ ca ye divāmaithune ratāḥ

and the fate of Brahmins who perform sacrifices for many, who live a dog's life, who practise intercourse by the mouth, and who are given to intercourse by day —

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 50 (7.73.50)

brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutya yo vai lobhāddadāti na | teṣāṃ gatiṃ gamiṣyāmi śvo na hanyāṃ jayadratham

and of one who promises something to a Brahmin and out of greed does not give it — I shall go to their fate, if tomorrow I do not kill Jayadratha.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). Only the closing refrain recalls the critical edition's star passage 7.51.34d*0370_02.

Verse 51 (7.73.51)

dharmādapetā ye cānye mayā nātrānukīrtitāḥ | ye cānukīrtitāsteṣāṃ gatiṃ kṣipramavāpnuyām

And whatever other offenders against dharma I have not named here — may I quickly reach the fate of those, and of those I have named,

Verse 52 (7.73.52)

yadi vyuṣṭāmimāṃ rātriṃ śvo na hanyāṃ jayadratham | imāṃ cāpyaparāṃ bhūyaḥ pratijñāṃ me nibodhata

yadyasminnahate pāpe sūryo'stamupayāsyati | ihaiva sampraveṣṭā'haṃ jvalitaṃ jātavedasam

If the sun goes down while that sinner is still not slain, I shall enter the blazing fire right here.

Note on the text: Corrected यद्यस्मिन्न हत्ते → यद्यस्मिन्नहते (misprint in Wikisource; हत्ते is not a word, a doubled त, the critical edition reads "yady asminn ahate"). Lines 1–2 are CE 7.51.37c and 37e.

Verse 54 (7.73.54)

asurasuramanuṣyāḥ pakṣiṇo voragā vā | pitṛrajanicarā vā brahmadevarṣayo vā | caramacaramapīdaṃ yatparaṃ cāpi tasmāt | tadapi mama ripuṃ taṃ rakṣituṃ naiva śaktāḥ

Asuras, gods and men, birds and serpents, the Fathers and the night-rovers, Brahmins and the seers of the gods — this whole world, moving and unmoving, and whatever lies beyond it: even all of these cannot protect that enemy of mine.

Note on the text: Removed the stray wiki marks (--) at the end of the split line and moved the sandhi त् of तस्मात् to the end of line 3.

Verse 55 (7.73.55)

Even if he enters Rasatala, foremost of the nether realms, or the sky, or the city of the gods, or the city of Diti's sons, still at dawn I shall strike off, with hundreds of arrows, the head of Abhimanyu's enemy.

Note on the text: Line 4 begins भृशमभिमन्युरिपोः where the critical edition has "bhṛśam abhipatya ripoḥ" (variant).

Verse 56 (7.73.56)

evamuktvā vicikṣepa gāṇḍīvaṃ savyadakṣiṇam | tasya sarvamatikramya dhanuḥśabdo'spṛśaddivam

Having spoken thus, he drew the Gandiva with his left hand and his right, and the twang of the bow, surpassing every other sound, reached the sky.

Verse 57 (7.73.57)

arjunena pratijñāte pāñcajanyaṃ janārdanaḥ | pradadhmau tatra saṅkruddho devadattaṃ ca phalgunaḥ

When Arjuna had made his vow, Janardana blew the Panchajanya there, and Phalguna, in a fury, blew the Devadatta.

Verse 58 (7.73.58)

sa pāñcajanyo'cyutavaktravāyunā | bhṛśaṃ supūrṇodaraniḥsṛtadhvaniḥ | jagatsapātālaviyaddigīśvaraṃ | prakampayāmāsa yugātyaye yathā

That Panchajanya, filled with the breath from Achyuta's mouth, its sound pouring out of its full belly, shook the world with its nether regions, its sky and its quarters and their lords, as at the end of an age.

Verse 59 (7.73.59)

tato vāditraghoṣāśca prādurāsansahasraśaḥ | siṃhanādaśca pāṇḍūnāṃ pratijñāte mahātmanā

Then thousands of musical instruments sounded, and the lion-roars of the Pandavas rose, when the great-souled one had made his vow.

Note on the text: Line 1 ends सहस्रशः where the critical edition has "samantataḥ" (variant).

Verse 60 (7.73.60)

prānṛtyadiva gāṇḍīvaṃ śarāstūṇīgatā mudā | nirākrāmanniva tadā svayameva mṛdhaiṣiṇaḥ

The Gandiva seemed to dance for joy, and the arrows lying in the quiver, eager for battle, seemed to step out of themselves.

Note on the text: Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick). Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.43d*0373_01–02.

Verse 61 (7.73.61)

bhīmasenaḥ susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ pratyabhāṣata bhārata | dhanañjayamabhiprekṣya harṣagadgadayā girā

And Bhimasena, greatly delighted, answered, O Bharata, looking at Dhananjaya in a voice thick with joy:

pratijñodbhavaśabdena kṛṣṇaśaṅkhasvanena ca | nihato dhārtarāṣṭro'yaṃ sānubandhaḥ suyodhanaḥ

"By the sound that has risen from your vow, and by the ringing of Krishna's conch, this Suyodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, with all his kin, is as good as slain."

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.43d*0373_05–06. Given to Bhimasena: the words are his, and the heading "Sanjaya said" is printed only after verse 63.

atha mṛditatamāgryadāmamālyaṃ | tava sutaśokamayaṃ ca roṣajātam | vyapanudati mahāprabhāvametan | naravara vākyamidaṃ mahārthamiṣṭam

"Now this speech, O best of men — weighty in meaning, welcome, and of great power — drives off that state of yours, full of grief for your son and sprung from rage, crushed like the finest wreath and garland."

Note on the text: Corrected महाप्रभावसेन-- / न्नरवर → महाप्रभावमेतन् / नरवर (misprint in Wikisource; the critical edition's star passage reads "mahāprabhāvam etan / naravara"); removed the stray wiki marks (--) at the split and moved the sandhi न् of एतन् to the end of line 3. Not in the critical edition's main text; its four lines are star passage 7.51.43d*0373_07–10 (Bhimasena's words to Arjuna).

Then the soldiers, with conches, kettledrums and tabors, together with the bards and heralds, honoured Jishnu with songs of praise.

Note on the text: Corrected शङ्ख्यैश्च → शङ्खैश्च (misprint in Wikisource; a stray य, the critical edition reads "śaṅkhaiś ca"). Not in the critical edition's main text; its two lines are star passage 7.51.43d*0373_11–12.

Verse 65 (7.73.65)

tadā bhīmaṃ balaṃ sarvaṃ tena nādena mohitam | tāvakaṃ tanmahārāja viṣaṇṇaṃ samapadyata

Then all that dreadful army of yours, O great king, bewildered by that roar, fell into despondency.

Note on the text: Corrected बलं सर्वे → बलं सर्वं (misprint in Wikisource; the plural सर्वे cannot agree with the neuter बलम्, the critical edition reads "balaṃ sarvaṃ").
