Duryodhana Unhorsed; the Great Melee

Duryodhana meets Yudhishthira's rain of arrows head on, but Yudhishthira kills his horses and charioteer, fells his banner, bow and sword, and leaves him standing on the ground. Karna, Ashvatthama, Kripa and others rush to rescue him, the Pandavas gather round Yudhishthira, and the two armies close in a general melee of men, horses, elephants and chariots. Elephants trample and toss the foot-soldiers, warriors fight with fists, hair-grips and knives, headless trunks rise up, and friend can no longer be told from foe. Karna slays Panchalas, Arjuna Trigartas and Bhima Kurus, and the destruction goes on past midday.
