Karna Asks for Shalya as His Charioteer
Dhritarashtra lists Arjuna's lone feats and asks what Duryodhana did next, then laments his own folly while Sanjaya reminds him that he ignored every warning. On the morning of the seventeenth day Karna vows to kill Arjuna that day or die, tells of the divine bow Vijaya that Parashurama gave him, and admits where Arjuna is better equipped: the bow Gandiva, Krishna as charioteer, and Agni's chariot with its monkey banner. To make up the difference he asks Duryodhana to have Shalya, the master of horses, drive his chariot, and Duryodhana agrees and goes to the king of the Madras.

svena cchandena naḥ sarvānavadhīdvyaktamarjunaḥ | na hyasya samare mucyedantako'pyātatāyinaḥ
Arjuna has plainly slain all of us, just as he pleased; not even Death himself, armed as he is and bent on killing, could escape him in battle.
Note on the text: Wikisource has सर्वानवधीत् ("killed all of us") where the CE has सर्वान् नावधीत्; a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept.

pārtho hyeko'haradbhadrāmekaścāgnimatarpayat | ekaścemāṃ mahīṃ jitvā cakre balibhṛto nṛpān

kāryasya mahato bhede lāghave dūrapātane | sauṣṭhave cāstrapāte ca savyasācī na matsamaḥ
In splitting a mighty target, in quickness, in striking from afar, in skill and in the discharge of missiles, Savyasachin is no match for me.
Note on the text: Wikisource has कार्यस्य for CE kāyasya ("body"); the page's commentary glosses कार्यस्य, so this is the vulgate reading, kept and read here as "target".
Verse 45 (8.22.45)
प्राणे शौर्येऽथ विज्ञाने विक्रमे चापि भारत । निमित्तज्ञानयोगे च सव्यसाची न मत्समः ॥
prāṇe śaurye'tha vijñāne vikrame cāpi bhārata | nimittajñānayoge ca savyasācī na matsamaḥ

There is a bow named Vijaya, the greatest of all weapons, which Vishvakarman, wishing to please him, made for Indra.
Note on the text: Corrected तद्वनुः → तद्धनुः (misprint in Wikisource; व for ध, a broken conjunct; CE dhanuḥ). Wikisource has प्रियकामेन for CE abhikāmena; a variant.

With it I shall fight the mighty-armed Arjuna, best of conquerors; and as Indra in battle struck down all the assembled Daityas, so shall I conquer all the Pandavas in the fight.
Note on the text: Removed the wiki quote marks (backtick and apostrophe) around the last line. Lines = CE 38c, 38e and star 38f*0197_01 (nijaghāna tathā sarvāñ jeṣyāmi yudhi pāṇḍavān).

adya duryodhanāhaṃ tvāṃ nandayiṣye sabāndhavam | nihatya samare vīramarjunaṃ jayatāṃ varam
Today, Duryodhana, I shall delight you and your kinsmen by killing in battle the hero Arjuna, best of conquerors.

ज्या तस्य धनुषो दिव्या तथाऽक्षय्ये महेषुधी । सारथिस्तस्य गोविन्दो मम तादृङ् न विद्यते ॥
jyā tasya dhanuṣo divyā tathā'kṣayye maheṣudhī | sārathistasya govindo mama tādṛṅ na vidyate
The string of his bow is divine, and his two great quivers are inexhaustible; and his charioteer is Govinda. I have no charioteer like that.
Note on the text: Corrected तादृङ्ग विद्यते → तादृङ् न विद्यते (misprint in Wikisource; ग for न; CE tādṛṅ na vidyate). Line 1 = CE 45a; line 2 = CE star 45b*0198_01.

And Krishna, creator of the world, guards that chariot. Without these three I am to fight the Pandava.
Note on the text: Corrected युद्वुमिच्छामि → योद्धुमिच्छामि (misprint in Wikisource; a broken form; CE yoddhum icchāmi). Wikisource has एभिस्त्रिभिः ("with these three") for CE ebhir dravyair; a variant.

In strength of arm none equals the king of the Madras, and in weapons no archer at all equals me.
Verse 68 (8.22.68)
तथा शल्यसमो नास्ति हयज्ञाने हि कश्चन । सोऽयमभ्यधिकः कृष्णाद्भविष्यति रथो मम ॥
tathā śalyasamo nāsti hayajñāne hi kaścana | so'yamabhyadhikaḥ kṛṣṇādbhaviṣyati ratho mama
And none equals Shalya in knowledge of horses; so this chariot of mine will surpass Krishna's.
Note on the text: Wikisource has हयज्ञाने … कृष्णात् for CE hayayāne … pārthāt; a variant.
Verse 69 (8.22.69)
एवं कृते रथस्थोऽहं गुणैरभ्यधिकोऽर्जुनात् । विजयेयमहं सङ्ख्ये फल्गुनं कुरुसत्तम ॥

samudyātuṃ na śakṣyanti devā api savāsavāḥ | etatkṛtaṃ mahārāja tvayecchāmi parantapa

na hi me samare śaktāḥ samudyātuṃ surāsurāḥ | kimu pāṇḍusutā rājanraṇe mānuṣayonayaḥ
For neither gods nor asuras can stand up against me in battle; how much less the sons of Pandu, O king, born of human wombs?
