Duryodhana Asks Shalya to Drive Karna's Chariot
Duryodhana humbly asks Shalya, king of Madra, to act as Karna's charioteer, as Krishna drives Arjuna's chariot. Shalya answers in a fury that a king of his rank cannot serve a Suta's son, sets out the duties of the four classes, and rises to leave. Duryodhana restrains him with flattery, setting him above Krishna in knowledge of horses, and Shalya agrees on the condition that he may speak as he pleases in Karna's presence.
