The Gods Give Half Their Might to Shiva

Brahma asks Shiva to destroy the asuras whose cities are overrunning the worlds. Shiva says he cannot do it alone, and the gods, who cannot bear half his strength, ask him to take half of theirs. Shiva asks for half the strength of each god and for the worlds to become his beasts, so that he may be lord of beasts and kill the asuras without sin; he then promises the frightened gods release from beasthood through the Pashupata vow. Taking half their energy, he becomes the greatest of the gods, Pashupati, Bhava and Mahadeva, and the gods consecrate him.
