The Chariot of Rudra

Continuing his tale to Shalya, Duryodhana tells how the gods gave half their radiance to Shiva and asked Vishvakarma to build him a chariot. The earth, the mountains, the sun and moon, the rivers, the Vedas, the seasons and the sacrifices become its parts; the year is made his bow and Time's night its string, and Agni, Soma and Vishnu are made his arrow. Shiva mounts the finished chariot, armed and praised by sages, and asks who is to be its charioteer.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the input's 41 verses agree with the raw page's <poem> block (the page has no table; Wikisource numbers 1–41 are kept). Below the colophon the page prints a second <poem> block headed (पाठान्तरः), a 33-verse parallel version of the same story (numbered ११–४३, opening with स्थाणुरुवाच); it is a variant reading, not part of the base text, and was not added. The automatic alignment matched few verses because verses 1–32 are the critical edition's Appendix I No. 2 (a long insertion after 8.24.84b) and verses 33–41 are its main text 8.24.84c–94. Speaker: Duryodhana (the page's heading दुर्योधन उवाच); he is telling Shalya the story that Markandeya told his father. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 2 (printed after 8.24.84b), lines @002_0039–0040 (8.24.084b@002_0039–0040). The CE's preceding line @002_0038 carries the heading duryodhanaḥ (as the page does) and a line (63cd) that is not on the page.
