Shalya Agrees to Drive Karna's Chariot
Duryodhana reminds Shalya how Brahma drove Rudra's chariot and asks him to drive Karna's. Shalya recalls the old tale and warns that Krishna would fight himself if Arjuna fell, but Duryodhana praises Karna's deeds and Shalya's own strength. Shalya consents on condition that he may speak freely to Karna, and Duryodhana embraces Karna; after a further appeal Shalya promises to drive his horses, claiming a charioteer's skill like Matali's.

Verse 1 (8.29.1)
एवं स भगवान्देवः सर्वलोकपितामहः । सारथ्यमकरोत्तत्र ब्रह्मा रुद्रोऽभवद्रथी ॥
evaṃ sa bhagavāndevaḥ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ | sārathyamakarottatra brahmā rudro'bhavadrathī
Thus the blessed god Brahma, grandsire of all the worlds, acted as charioteer there, while Rudra became the chariot-warrior.
Note on the text: Line 2 reads ब्रह्मा रुद्रोऽभवद्रथी where the CE (8.25.1c) has yatra rudro 'bhavad rathī; a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept.
Verse 2 (8.29.2)
रथिनोऽभ्यधिको वीर कर्तव्यो रथसारथिः । तस्मात्त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र नियच्छ तुरगान्युधि ॥
rathino'bhyadhiko vīra kartavyo rathasārathiḥ | tasmāttvaṃ puruṣavyāghra niyaccha turagānyudhi
O hero, the charioteer of a chariot must be made greater than the chariot-warrior himself. Therefore, tiger among men, rein in the horses in this battle.
Note on the text: CE 8.25.2 (lines 2a and 2c, 1:1); line 1 reads रथिनोऽभ्यधिको where the CE has rathinābhyadhiko; a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept. The automatic alignment found no match.
Verse 3 (8.29.3)
यथा देवगणैस्तत्र वृतो यत्नात्पितामहः । तथाऽस्माभिर्भवान्यत्नात्कर्णादभ्यधिको वृतः ॥
yathā devagaṇaistatra vṛto yatnātpitāmahaḥ | tathā'smābhirbhavānyatnātkarṇādabhyadhiko vṛtaḥ
Just as the gods took pains to choose the Grandsire there, so we have taken pains to choose you as one greater than Karna.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's main text; it is CE Appendix I No. 5 (printed after 8.25.2), lines 0001–0002 (8.25.2d@005_0001–0002).
Verse 4 (8.29.4)
यथा देवैर्महाराज ईश्वरादधिको वृतः । तथा देवैर्महाराज क्षिप्रं रुद्रस्येव पितामहः । नियच्छ तुरगान्युद्धे राधेयस्य महाद्युते ॥
yathā devairmahārāja īśvarādadhiko vṛtaḥ | tathā devairmahārāja kṣipraṃ rudrasyeva pitāmahaḥ | niyaccha turagānyuddhe rādheyasya mahādyute
As the gods, O great king, chose one greater than Ishvara himself, so now, swiftly, as the Grandsire did for Rudra, rein in the horses for Radheya in this battle, O man of great splendour.
Note on the text: Corrected रुद्रस्यव → रुद्रस्येव (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign; the CE Appendix reads rudrasyeva). Corrected युद्वे → युद्धे (misprint in Wikisource; द्व for द्ध, a broken conjunct). Not in the critical edition's main text; it is CE Appendix I No. 5 (printed after 8.25.2), lines 0003–0005 (8.25.2d@005_0003–0005). Line 2 reads तथा देवैर्महाराज where the CE has tathā bhavān api; a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept. In the CE the heading śalya uvāca falls before line 3 (@005_0005); the text printed here puts the heading after it, so line 3 stays with Duryodhana.
