Parashurama Wins Shiva's Weapons

Duryodhana tells Shalya a second tale he heard from a brahmin. Rama, son of Jamadagni, pleased Shiva by austerities and was promised weapons once he was pure. When the Daityas oppressed the gods, Shiva sent him against them; he conquered them, was healed by Shiva's touch, and received divine weapons. Duryodhana adds that Rama gave all the science of the bow to Karna, and argues that such a man cannot be a charioteer's son.

Verse 1 (8.28.1)

इमं चाप्यपरं भूय इतिहासं निबोध मे । पितुर्मम सकाशे वै ब्राह्मणः प्राह धर्मवित् ॥

imaṃ cāpyaparaṃ bhūya itihāsaṃ nibodha me | piturmama sakāśe vai brāhmaṇaḥ prāha dharmavit

Hear from me yet another tale, which a brahmin versed in dharma told in my father's presence.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the input's 35 verses agree with the raw page's table row for row (Wikisource numbers 1–35 are kept). The page follows the vulgate's wording of the critical edition's 8.24.129–161 (the story of Rama Jamadagnya's weapons), with a few star passages; each verse's note maps it. Duryodhana tells the story to Shalya throughout (the page's headings दुर्योधन उवाच, शङ्कर उवाच, परशुराम उवाच, ईश्वर उवाच). The input carried the heading शङ्कर over verses 6–18; verses 8 and 10–17 are Duryodhana's narration and verse 9 is Rama's speech, so they are re-assigned. Corrected इति हासं → इतिहासं (misprint in Wikisource; word wrongly split (हास 'laughter'); CE itihāsaṃ). = 8.24.129a and 129c (…itihāsaṃ nibodha me / pitur mama sakāśe yaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ prāha dharmavit).

Verse 2 (8.28.2)

श्रुत्वा चैतद्वचश्चित्रं हेतुकार्यार्थतत्त्ववित् । कुरु शल्य विनिश्चित्य मा भूदत्र विचारणा ॥

śrutvā caitadvacaścitraṃ hetukāryārthatattvavit | kuru śalya viniścitya mā bhūdatra vicāraṇā

You who understand the reasons, the effects and the truth of things: when you have heard this wonderful account, make up your mind, O Shalya, and let there be no more doubt about it.

Note on the text: = 8.24.130a and 130c (…hetukāryārthasaṃhitam in the CE, hetukāryārthatattvavit here).

Verse 3 (8.28.3)

भार्गवाणां कुले जातो जमदग्निर्महातपाः । तस्य रामेति विख्यातः पुत्रस्तेजोगुणान्वितः ॥

bhārgavāṇāṃ kule jāto jamadagnirmahātapāḥ | tasya rāmeti vikhyātaḥ putrastejoguṇānvitaḥ

In the family of the Bhargavas was born Jamadagni, of great austerity; his son, famous as Rama, was endowed with splendour and virtues.

Verse 4 (8.28.4)

स तीव्रं तप आस्थाय सम्प्रसादितवान्भवम् । अस्त्रहेतोः प्रसन्नात्मा नियतः संयतेन्द्रियः ॥

sa tīvraṃ tapa āsthāya samprasāditavānbhavam | astrahetoḥ prasannātmā niyataḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ

Resorting to fierce austerity, with a tranquil mind, disciplined and with his senses controlled, he propitiated Bhava for the sake of weapons.

Note on the text: = 8.24.132a and 132c (…prasādayitavān bhavam; here samprasāditavān bhavam).

Verse 5 (8.28.5)

Pleased with him for his devotion and his calm, Mahadeva, seeing what was in his heart, showed him his own form in person: Shankara, the giver of all welfare.

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 = 8.24.133a and 133c (tasmai for tasya); line 3 is the CE star passage 8.24.133d*0289_01 (pratyakṣeṇa mahādevaḥ svāṃ tanuṃ sarvaśaṃkaraḥ). The automatic alignment found no match.

Thus addressed by the God of gods, the trident-bearer, Jamadagni's son replied to the great one, bowing his head to the Lord.

Note on the text: Narration (Duryodhana): the page's heading शङ्कर उवाच, which the input carried over from verse 6, does not extend to this verse. The CE heads Duryodhana at 8.24.138, after Rama's reply.

So, pleased, the Lord often recounted his virtues in the presence of the gods and the ancestors, O slayer of foes.

Note on the text: Corrected बहुशो कथयद्विभुः → बहुशोऽकथयद्विभुः (misprint in Wikisource; missing avagraha: without it कथयत् is no finite form; CE bahuśo 'kathayat prabhuḥ). = 8.24.141a and 141c (…samakṣam arisūdanaḥ in the CE; here the vocative).
