Karna Condemns the Bahlikas and the Madras

Karna answers Shalya's rebuke, saying he spares him only out of friendship and for Duryodhana's cause, and Shalya retorts that a thousand Karnas could not beat the foe. Karna then repeats what Brahmins said in Dhritarashtra's court against the Bahlikas of the land of the five rivers: their drinking, dancing and shameless women, their foods and vessels, their lost dharma and their descent from two pishachas. He cites a Bahlika's song of longing, a rakshasi's song at Shakala, and lists tribes and peoples to be shunned.

Verse 1 (8.37.1)

tataḥ punarmahārāja madrarājamarindamaḥ | abhyabhāṣata rādheyaḥ sannivāryottaraṃ vacaḥ

Then, O great king, Radheya, the tamer of foes, spoke again to the king of the Madras, checking his words with a reply.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.1 (similarity 0.987); मद्रराजमरिन्दमः (the epithet agreeing with राधेयः) where the CE has madrarājam ariṃdamam, a recension variant. Speaker: Sanjaya, as the page heads it (सञ्जय उवाच). Dropped the page's opening title line (कर्णेन सोपहासं शल्यगर्हणम्), a heading and not a verse, and the commentary and editor's note printed after the colophon.

Verse 2 (8.37.2)

nirbhartsanārthaṃ śalya tvaṃ yattu jalpitavānasi | nāhaṃ śakyastvayā vācā vibhīṣayitumāhave

Because you, Shalya, have been rebuking me with your babble, hear this: I cannot be frightened by words in battle.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.2 (matched by hand; the alignment found no match): line 1 reads निर्भर्त्सनार्थं शल्य त्वं यत्तु जल्पितवानसि where the CE has yat tvaṃ nidarśanārthaṃ māṃ śalya jalpitavān asi: a recension variant. Speaker: Karna. The page's heading सञ्जय उवाच stands before verse 1, which is narration; Karna's own direct speech begins here and runs to verse 10, so it is given to him.

Verse 3 (8.37.3)

yadi māṃ devatāḥ sarvā yodhayeyuḥ savāsavāḥ | tathāpi me bhayaṃ na syātkimu pārthātsakeśavāt

Even if all the gods with Vasava at their head were to fight me, I should still feel no fear; how much less of Partha with Keshava!

Note on the text: CE 8.30.3 (identical). The CE's star line 8.30.3b*0384_01 is not on the page.

Verse 4 (8.37.4)

nāhaṃ bhīṣayituṃ śakyaḥ śuddhakarmā mahāhave | abhijānīhi śaktastvamanyaṃ bhīṣayituṃ raṇe

I, pure in my deeds, cannot be frightened in the great battle. Understand that it is someone else whom you are able to frighten in the fight.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.4 (matched by hand; the alignment found no match): line 2 is a recension variant of 4c (anyaṃ jānīhi yaḥ śakyas tvayā bhīṣayituṃ raṇe); line 1 reads नाहं भीषयितुं शक्यः शुद्धकर्मा महाहवे where the CE has nāhaṃ bhīṣayituṃ śakyo vāṅmātreṇa kathaṃ cana. Corrected शुद्धकर्णा → शुद्धकर्मा (misprint in Wikisource; ण for म; the feminine form cannot agree with the male speaker and the sense is 'pure in deed'; the CE reads a different line here, so this is the smallest fix yielding the evident word).

Verse 5 (8.37.5)

nīcasya balametāvatpāruṣyaṃ yattvamāttha mām | aśakto hi guṇānvaktuṃ valgase bahu durmate

This is all the strength of a base man, the harshness with which you speak to me. Unable to tell of my merits, you rave on at length, you fool.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.5 (similarity 0.877). Corrected यतत्त्वमात्थ → यत्त्वमात्थ (misprint in Wikisource; a stray extra त; the CE reads yat tvam āttha). Line 2 reads अशक्तो हि गुणान्वक्तुं where the CE has aśakto 'smadguṇān prāptum: a recension variant.

Verse 6 (8.37.6)

na hi karṇaḥ samudbhūto bhayārthamiha madraka | vikramārthamahaṃ jāto yaśorthaṃ ca tathā''tmanaḥ

Karna was not born here to be afraid, O Madraka; I was born for valour, and for my own renown.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.6 (similarity 0.9); recension variants (मद्रक where the CE has māriṣa; तथाऽऽत्मनः for tathaiva ca).

Verse 7 (8.37.7)

sakhibhāvena sauhārdānmitrabhāvena caiva hi | kāraṇaistribhiretaistvaṃ śalya jīvasi sāmpratam

Out of comradeship, out of goodwill, and out of alliance: for these three reasons, Shalya, you are alive at this moment.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the two lines are its star passage 8.30.6d*0386_01-02. Corrected मितत्रभावेन → मित्रभावेन (misprint in Wikisource; a stray extra त; the star reads mitrabhāvena).

Verse 8 (8.37.8)

rājñaśca dhārtarāṣṭrasya kāryaṃ sumahadudyatam | mayi taccāhitaṃ śalya tena jīvasi me kṣaṇam

A very great task of King Dhritarashtra's son has been undertaken, and it rests upon me; for that reason you live a little longer.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the star passage 8.30.6d*0386_03-04 (identical).

Verse 9 (8.37.9)

kṛtaśca samayaḥ pūrvaṃ kṣantavyaṃ vipriyaṃ tava | samayaḥ paripālyo me tena jīvasi sāmpratam

An agreement was made earlier that I must bear your unkind words. I must keep that agreement; so you live at this moment.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the star passage 8.30.6d*0386_05-06 (line 2 reads साम्प्रतम् where the star has madraka, a recension variant). Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick/apostrophe) that bracket a vulgate-only passage on the page.

Verse 10 (8.37.10)

ṛte śalyasahasreṇa vijayeyamahaṃ parān | mitradrohastu pāpīyāniti jīvasi sāmpratam

Even without a thousand Shalyas I could conquer my enemies; but betrayal of a friend is the worse sin, and so you live at this moment.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the star passage 8.30.6d*0386_07-08 (identical).

These are the wailings of the distressed that you utter against our foes, Karna; those foes cannot be conquered in battle by a thousand Karnas.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it corresponds to the star passage 8.30.6d*0386_09-10 (line 1 reads आर्तप्रलापांस्त्वं कर्ण यान्ब्रवीषि परान्प्रति where the star has nanu pralāpāḥ karṇaite yān bravīṣi parān prati; line 2 reads न ते कर्णसहस्रेण where the star has ṛte karṇasahasreṇa, whose sense is the reverse). Speaker: Shalya, as the page heads it (शल्य उवाच); the CE star also gives Shalya the first line, but prints a stray 'saṃjaya uvāca' heading before the second.

Listen, ruler of the Madras, with undivided mind to what I heard being said in Dhritarashtra's presence.

Note on the text: CE 8.30.7 (similarity 0.9); line 1 reads इदं त्वमेकाग्रमनाः where the CE has idaṃ tu me tvam ekāgraḥ: a recension variant. Speaker: Karna. The page's heading सञ्जय उवाच stands before verse 12 and the next heading (कर्ण उवाच) before verse 33, but verses 13-32 are Karna's own direct speech (verse 12 introduces it), so they are given to him; the Brahmin's words quoted within them are not headed by the page and stay with Karna.
