Karna Tells Shalya of Parashurama's Curse

Answering Shalya's taunts, Karna says he knows the strength of Arjuna and Krishna and will fight them without fear. He tells how he won the Brahma weapon from Parashurama by posing as a Brahmin, how Indra, as a worm, pierced his thigh, and how his teacher cursed him on learning he was a Suta: the weapon would fail him at the decisive hour. He then recounts a second curse, from a Brahmin whose sacrificial cow's calf he had killed, that his chariot wheel would sink into a pit while he fought his enemy. He ends by warning Shalya to hear his own faults.

Verse 1 (8.36.1)

madrādhipasyādhirathirmahātmā | vaco niśamyāpriyamapratītaḥ | uvāca śalyaṃ viditaṃ mamaita | dyathāvidhāvarjunavāsudevau

Hearing the unwelcome words of the king of the Madras, the great-souled son of Adhiratha was displeased and said to Shalya, "I know well what manner of men Arjuna and Vasudeva are.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.1 (similarity 0.925); line 1 reads मद्राधिपस्याधिरथिर्महात्मा where the CE has madrādhipasyādhirathis tadaivam, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept. Speaker: the page's heading सञ्जय उवाच stands before this verse; lines 1-2 are Sanjaya's narration and lines 3-4 begin Karna's speech, which runs with no further heading to the end of the page. Dropped the page's opening title line शापप्राप्तिकथनम्), a heading and not a verse, and the commentary printed after the colophon. Removed the table's line-break marks ('--') where a word is split across lines.

Verse 2 (8.36.2)

śaure rathaṃ vāhayato'rjunasya | balaṃ mahāstrāṇi ca pāṇḍavasya | ahaṃ vijānāmi yathāvadadya | parokṣabhūtaṃ tava tattu śalya

I know fully today the strength of Arjuna, whose chariot Shauri drives, and the great weapons of the son of Pandu; but these, Shalya, lie hidden from you.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.2 (identical). Speaker: Karna; the page prints no heading here, and his speech continues from the second half of verse 1 to the end of the page.

Verse 3 (8.36.3)

Yet I shall fight those two Krishnas, the foremost of all who bear weapons, without fear; for what torments me far more today is the curse laid on me by Rama (Parashurama) and by that best of Brahmins.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.3 (similarity 0.935); line 1 reads तौ चाप्यहं where the CE has tau cāpradhṛṣyau, and line 3 हि where the CE has tu: recension variants. The CE inserts the star passage 8.29.3b*0355 between the two halves of this verse; the page gives it as the next three verses. Removed the table's line-break marks ('--') where a word is split across lines.

Verse 4 (8.36.4)

purā mahendrādrivare samudre | tapasvinaṃ rāmamupetya śalya | astrārthinaṃ mā'dya śiṣyaṃ gṛhāṇe | tyathā'bruvaṃ brāhmaṇacchadmanā ca

Long ago, Shalya, I went to the ascetic Rama on Mahendra, the best of mountains, by the sea, and, hiding my caste under a Brahmin's guise, said, 'I seek weapons; accept me as your disciple.'

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the four lines are its star passage 8.29.3b*0355_01-04 (समुद्रे where the star reads samṛddhe, a recension variant). Removed the table's line-break marks ('--') where a word is split across lines. Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick/apostrophe) that bracket a vulgate-only passage on the page.

Verse 5 (8.36.5)

tatrāvasaṃ brāhmaṇa ityavipro | brahmāstralobhādanṛtena cāham | tajjāmadagnyena paraṃ mahāstraṃ | samantrayuktaṃ vihitaṃ mamāsīt

I lived there as a Brahmin though I was none, speaking a lie out of greed for the Brahma weapon; and the son of Jamadagni gave me that supreme great weapon, complete with its mantras.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the four lines are its star passage 8.29.3b*0355_05-08 (identical).

When I had mastered that weapon, the great sage, taking me for a Brahmin, said to me, 'You may use this weapon only when you are in dire peril; go into battle and win your ends with it.'

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the four lines are its star passage 8.29.3b*0355_09-12 (identical). tatrāpi me devarājena vighno | hitārthinā phalgunasyaiva śalya | kṛto vibhedena mamorumetya | praviśya kīṭasya tanuṃ virūpām

Even there, Shalya, the king of the gods, wishing Phalguna well, put an obstacle in my way: he came to my thigh, entered the hideous body of a worm, and split it open.

Note on the text: Lines 1-2 are CE 8.29.4c and lines 3-4 are CE 8.29.5a (विभेदेन where the CE reads 'vabhedena, a recension variant); matched by hand, as the alignment found no match. The CE's 8.29.4a (avātsaṃ vai brāhmaṇacchadmanāhaṃ / rāme purā divyam astraṃ cikīrṣuḥ) has no counterpart on the page, which gives the star passage (verses 4-6) in its place.

Verse 8 (8.36.8)

mamorumetya prabibheda kīṭaḥ | supte gurau tatra śiro nidhāya | ūruprabhedācca mahānbabhūva | śarīrato me ghanaśoṇitaughaḥ

The worm reached my thigh and bored through it, resting its head there while my teacher slept; and from the wound in my thigh a great flood of thick blood poured out of my body.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the four lines are its star passage 8.29.5b*0356_01-04 (identical).

To him I told the truth about myself, Shalya: 'I am a Suta.' When that great ascetic heard me, his mind seized by fury, he cursed me:

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); lines 1-2 are the star passage 8.29.5d*0357_03-04 (आख्यातवान्सूत इत्येव शल्य where the star reads ākhyātavān sūtavadetya śalya, a recension variant) and lines 3-4 are 8.29.6b*0358_01-02 (identical). In the CE's constituted text this place has 8.29.6a (pṛṣṭaś cāhaṃ tam avocaṃ maharṣiṃ / sūto 'ham asmīti sa māṃ śaśāpa), for which the page gives these lines. Removed the table's line-break marks ('--') where a word is split across lines.

I have now come to possess that weapon, with which I shall hurl my arrows at the hosts of my foes in battle. Dhananjaya, glorious and mighty, trained in weapons, a fierce bowman of boundless energy, cruel, heroic, dreadful, who withstands his enemies: him I shall kill in battle.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition's apparatus: Wikisource prints only this one line (as '8-36-14f', the sixth line of its verse 14; lines a-e are lost, and the page's own commentary on 14 glosses the first of them, अस्त्रं ... Lines 1-5 are restored from the star passage 8.29.7d*0361_01-05 (astraṃ hi me tat pratipannam adya / yena kṣepsye samare śatrupūgān / pratāpinaṃ balavantaṃ kṛtāstraṃ / tam ugradhanvānam amitaujasaṃ ca / krūraṃ śūraṃ raudram amitrasāhaṃ), written in Devanagari with the CE's words exactly; line 6 is the page's own line (= *0361_06). So, with my strength, I shall hold back Partha, exceedingly mighty, wielder of great weapons, like an ocean, hard to approach, fierce, a flood of arrows that drowns kings, with my arrows, as the shore holds back the sea.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.10 (similarity 0.956); line 4 reads वेलेव पार्थमिषुभिर्वारयिष्ये where the CE has veleva pārtham iṣubhiḥ saṃsahiṣye: a recension variant.

yotsyāmyenaṃ śalya dhanañjayaṃ vai | mṛtyuṃ puraskṛtya raṇe jayaṃ vā | anyo hi na hyekarathena martyo | yudhyeta yaḥ pāṇḍavamindrakalpam

I shall fight this Dhananjaya, Shalya, setting death or victory before me; for no other mortal could fight in a single chariot against the Pandava who is the equal of Indra.

If I were asked in an assembly of Kshatriyas, I could myself tell of that Pandava's prowess in battle. Why do you, a fool with a bewildered mind, laugh and tell me of Phalguna's prowess?

Note on the text: CE 8.29.19 (similarity 0.789); recension variants throughout (ब्रूयां पृष्टः where the CE has brūyāṃ hṛṣṭaḥ; आख्यासि मे पौरुषं फल्गुनस्य for mām avocaḥ pauruṣam arjunasya).

A man who is most disagreeable, harsh, mean, an insulter, unforgiving even toward the forbearing: I could kill hundreds of men like you; yet I forbear, for this is a time for forbearing.

For the Pandava's sake you have spoken pleasing words, insulting me as though I were a fool, O doer of wrong; since you are crooked-minded toward me, who am straightforward, you are a betrayer of a friend; for friendship is made by the seven steps.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.21 (similarity 0.958). Corrected पाण्डवार्ये → पाण्डवार्थे (misprint in Wikisource; र्ये for र्थे; the CE reads pāṇḍavārthe). प्रियाणि where the CE has 'priyāṇi (apriyāṇi), and जिह्ममतिर्यतस्त्वं where the CE has jihmagatir hatas tvaṃ, are recension variants, Wikisource's readings kept.

Even so I shall fight the Pandava and Vasudeva in battle; that is the deed of a man like me. No ordinary man ever sets himself to go out against those two, Krishna and Dhananjaya.

saha yuddhaṃ sametābhyāmadyedaṃ samupasthitam | yuddhe'smiñjīvitaṃ me'dya śalya saṃśayamāgatam

This fight with the two of them together has now come upon me; in this battle my life is in doubt today, Shalya.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the star passage 8.29.39b*0383_07-08. Corrected युद्वेऽस्मिञ्जीवितं → युद्धेऽस्मिञ्जीवितं (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjunct, द्व for द्ध; the star reads yuddhe 'smiñ jīvitaṃ).

Verse 62 (8.36.62)

śakro'pyamararāṭ tābhyāmupagamyāhavaṃ saha | saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ gacchetkathaṃ vā manyate bhavān

Even Shakra, the king of the immortals, going into battle against the two together, would come into the gravest doubt of his life. What do you think?

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the star passage 8.29.39b*0383_09-10 (identical).

Verse 63 (8.36.63)

All this I have told you, though provoked, and not in friendship. I know you are reviling me; now hear the fault that lies within yourself.

Note on the text: CE 8.29.40 (similarity 0.787); line 2 reads दोषमात्मगतं शृणु where the CE has joṣam āssvottaraṃ śṛṇu: a recension variant. (The closing quote mark removed here ends the vulgate-only passage begun at verse 58 line 2.) Removed the stray wiki quote marks (backtick/apostrophe) that bracket a vulgate-only passage on the page.
