Karna Cuts Through the Panchalas

Dhritarashtra asks what Karna did after entering the Pandava army, and Sanjaya describes how Karna charges the Panchalas, killing their foremost warriors and Chedis by the hundred. Bhima and Nakula duel with Karna's sons Sushena and Satyasena, and Bhima beheads Satyasena, while Satyaki fights Vrishasena, who is carried off by Duhshasana and returns in a new chariot. Karna then fights off all the Pandava champions at once with astonishing speed, scatters them, destroys three hundred Chedi chariots, and advances on Yudhishthira, whom his protectors surround as the two armies close again.

Then the great chariot-warrior Vrishasena, mounting another chariot, struck the sons of Draupadi with seventy-three arrows and Yuyudhana with five,

Note on the text: Line 1 = CE 8.32.67a; line 2 = CE star 8.32.067b*0432_01 (draupadeyāṃs trisaptatyā yuyudhānaṃ ca pañcabhiḥ). The sentence runs on through verses 50–52.

Note on the text: Restored line 1 from the CE: Wikisource prints a blank row for 8-43-60a, with only the second line (विरथान्…) present; the CE star passage 8.32.073d*0433_03–04 has paśyatāṃ sarvasainyānām athaitān sūtanandanaḥ / virathān rathinaḥ śreṣṭhān nimeṣārdhāc cakāra ha.
