Arjuna and Karna Break into the Armies

Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya to tell in detail how the Samshaptakas fought Arjuna and how the Pandavas fought Karna. Karna arrays his host against the force led by Dhrishtadyumna, while Arjuna, enraged, charges the Samshaptakas and cuts down thousands of them. The Kuru and Pandava forces clash all along the line, and Karna, protected by Duryodhana, ravages the Pandava army, afflicts Yudhishthira and sets a river of blood flowing across the field.

Verse 1 (8.42.1)

tathā vyūḍheṣvanīkeṣu saṃsakteṣu ca sañjaya | saṃśaptakāḥ kathaṃ pārthaṃ kathaṃ karṇaṃ ca pāṇḍavāḥ

When the armies had been arrayed in this way and had engaged one another, Sanjaya, how did the Samshaptakas fight Partha, and how did the Pandavas fight Karna?

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: this page (Wikisource adhyaya 42) covers CE 8.32.1–22 (with CE star passages 8.32.9b*0426 and 8.32.22d*0427 and Appendix I No. 8); CE 8.32.23 onward is in Wikisource adhyaya 43. The input agrees with the raw page's table row for row (34 verses). After the colophon the page prints only three commentary glosses (on क्षत्रविट्‌शूद्र, युक्त्वा and the adhyaya number), which are not verses and are dropped. The heading line सङ्कुलयुद्धम् is a chapter-summary heading, not a verse. Corresponds to CE 8.32.1 (Wikisource कथं पार्थं for CE pārtho gataḥ, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept; the sentence is elliptical).

Verse 2 (8.42.2)

etadvistaraśo yuddhaṃ prabrūhi kuśalo hyasi | na hi tṛpyāmi vīrāṇāṃ śṛṇvāno yudhi vikramam

Tell me this battle in detail, for you are skilled; I am never sated with hearing of the valour of the heroes in battle.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.32.2 (Wikisource विक्रमम् for CE vikramān raṇe, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept).

Verse 3 (8.42.3)

tatsaṃsthitamatho dṛṣṭvā pratyamitraṃ mahadbalam | pratyavyūhattataḥ karṇo hitārthaṃ tanayasya te

Seeing that great enemy force standing arrayed, Karna then drew up his own counter-array, for the benefit of your son.

Note on the text: Corrected तत्संस्थिमथो → तत्संस्थितमथो (संस्थिम् is not a word and leaves the line a syllable short; the smallest fix is the participle संस्थितम्, "standing arrayed"; uncertain, as the critical edition has no parallel reading). Corresponds in place to CE 8.32.3 (tat sthāne samavasthāpya pratyamitraṃ mahābalam / avyūhatārjuno vyūhaṃ putrasya tava durnaye), of which this is a vulgate variant: here Karna arrays his host, in CE it is Arjuna who draws up the array.

Verse 4 (8.42.4)

That great host, thick with horsemen and elephants and crowded with foot-soldiers and chariots, looked dreadful and splendid, with Dhrishtadyumna at its head.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.32.4ac (Wikisource घोरमशोभत महद्बलम् for CE vyūḍham aśobhata mahad balam, with धृष्टद्युम्नमुखम् for -mukhair, recension variants, Wikisource's reading kept). The same couplet is the last verse of Wikisource adhyaya 41 (CE star passage 8.31.36d*0411_07–08).

Verse 5 (8.42.5)

pārāvatasavarṇāśvaścandrasūryasamadyutiḥ | sa pārṣato babhau dhanvī kālo vigrahavāniva

The son of Prishata, the archer, with horses the colour of pigeons and a radiance like the moon and the sun, shone like Death embodied.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.32.5 (Wikisource पारावतसवर्णाश्वः … चन्द्रसूर्यसमद्युतिः for CE pārāvatasavarṇāśvaś candrādityasamadyutiḥ, the same; स पार्षतो बभौ धन्वी for pārṣataḥ prababhau dhanvī, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept).

pārṣataṃ tvabhitastasthurdraupadeyā yuyutsavaḥ | sānugā dīptavapuṣaścandraṃ tārāgaṇā iva

The sons of Draupadi, eager to fight, with their followers and radiant in body, stood around the son of Prishata like a cluster of stars around the moon.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.32.6 (Wikisource दीप्तवपुषः for CE bhīmavapuṣaḥ, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept; the CE star line 8.32.6b*0425_01 is not on the page).

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.32.7, identical.

Verse 8 (8.42.8)

atha saṃśaptakāḥ pārthamabhyadhāvanvadhaiṣiṇaḥ | vijaye dhṛtasaṅkalpā mṛtyuṃ kṛtvānivartanam

That raised-up great army, swift as a flood of the ocean, was seen standing when it reached Partha, as the sea stands when it reaches the shore.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the two lines are its star passage 8.32.9b*0426_02–03 (placed after 8.32.9a).

Verse 11 (8.42.11)

mṛdnantaṃ śaravarṣaughairdrutamarjunamārdayat

It swiftly harassed Arjuna, who was crushing it with floods of showers of arrows.

Note on the text: Corrected मृद्गन्तं शवर्षौघैः → मृद्नन्तं शरवर्षौघैः (misprint in Wikisource; ग for न, and the र of शर dropped; the sense is "[the host] harassed Arjuna, who was crushing it with floods of arrow-showers"; uncertain, as the critical edition has no parallel). One line on the page (8-42-11a), the vulgate variant of CE 8.32.9c (pattimac chūravīraughair drutam arjunam ādravat), whose place in the verse it takes.
