Karna Parva · Adhyaya 41

The Two Armies Take Up Their Arrays

Karna sees the Pandavas' formation under Dhrishtadyumna and leads out his own army, to the cheers of the Kauravas, who look forward to the duel of Karna and Arjuna. Dhritarashtra asks how the armies were arrayed, and Sanjaya describes the Kaurava formation, shaped like the array of Brihaspati, with its wings, sub-wings and commanders. Yudhishthira points it out to Arjuna, assigns each Pandava warrior his Kaurava opponent, and the Pandavas draw up their counter-array with Dhrishtadyumna and Shikhandi in front.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.31.1ac (Wikisource महत् for CE paraiḥ, a recension variant, Wikisource's reading kept). Adhyaya note: this page (Wikisource adhyaya 41) covers CE 8.31.1–36 (with CE star passages and Appendix I No. 6) and its closing verse repeats CE 8.32.4; CE 8.31.37 onward is in Wikisource adhyaya 43. The input agrees with the raw page's table row for row (53 verses); the page has no text after its colophon. The heading line सेनाद्वये व्यूहरचनावर्णनम् is a chapter-summary heading, not a verse. Unheaded speech given to its speakers: the soldiers' cries (verses 8–12), Yudhishthira (42–43, 46–48), Arjuna (45).
