Ashvatthama Drives Yudhishthira Back
Ashvatthama blankets the battlefield with arrows, and Satyaki, Yudhishthira and the sons of Draupadi close on him together. Each trades volleys with him; he cuts their bows and strikes down Satyaki's charioteer. Yudhishthira taunts him as a Brahmin in name only and challenges him to fight Dhrishtadyumna; Ashvatthama answers with a shower of arrows, and Yudhishthira withdraws and goes off against Duryodhana's army.

Verse 1 (8.50.1)
drauṇiryudhiṣṭhiraṃ dṛṣṭvā śaineyenābhirakṣitam | draupadeyaistathā śūrairabhyavartata hṛṣṭavat
Seeing Yudhishthira guarded by Shaineya and by the brave sons of Draupadi, Drona's son charged at them, exultant.
Verse 2 (8.50.2)
kiranniṣugaṇānghorānhemapuṅkhāñśilāśitān | darśayanvividhānmārgāñśikṣayā laghuhastavān
He rained terrible volleys of gold-feathered arrows whetted on stone, showing many kinds of shooting-paths with the quick hand his training had given him.
Note on the text: Wikisource's second line reads शिक्षया लघुहस्तवान्; the critical edition reads śikṣārthaṃ laghuhastavat. Recension variant, kept.
Verse 3 (8.50.3)
khaṃ purayañśaraistīkṣṇairvegavadbhiḥ samantataḥ | yudhiṣṭhirasya samare diśaḥ sarvāḥ samāvṛṇot
Filling the sky on every side with swift, sharp arrows, he shut in all the quarters around Yudhishthira in that battle.
Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.39.3 (tataḥ khaṃ pūrayām āsa śarair divyāstramantritaiḥ / yudhiṣṭhiraṃ ca samare paryavārayad astravit), which the alignment left unmatched; Wikisource's wording is a recension variant, kept.
Verse 4 (8.50.4)
bhāradvājaśaraiśchannaṃ na prājñāyata kiñcana | bāṇabhūtamabhūtsarvamāyodhanaśiro mahat
Covered by the arrows of Bharadvaja's son, nothing could be made out; the whole great front of the battlefield had become nothing but arrows.
Note on the text: Wikisource reads भारद्वाजशरैश्छन्नं … आयोधनशिरो महत्; the critical edition reads drauṇāyaniśaracchannaṃ … āyodhanaśiro hi tat. Recension variant, kept.
Verse 5 (8.50.5)
bāṇajālaṃ diviṣṭhaṃ tatsvarṇapuṅkhavibhūṣitam | śuśubhe bharataśreṣṭha vimānamiva viṣṭhitam
That net of arrows standing in the sky, adorned with golden feathers, shone, O best of the Bharatas, like a heavenly car hung in the air.
Note on the text: Wikisource reads स्वर्णपुङ्खविभूषितम् and विमानमिव; the critical edition reads svarṇajālavibhūṣitam and vitānam iva. Recension variants, kept.
Verse 6 (8.50.6)
tena cchanne raṇe rājanbāṇajālena bhāsvatā | abhracchāyeva sañjajñe hṛtaraśmistamonudaḥ
O king, with the battlefield covered by that gleaming net of arrows, the sun, the dispeller of darkness, seemed robbed of his rays, as though shadowed by a cloud.
Note on the text: Corrected सजज्ञे → सञ्जज्ञे (misprint in Wikisource; the nasal is dropped; the critical edition reads saṃjajñe). The second line (हृतरश्मिस्तमोनुदः) is Wikisource's own; the critical edition has bāṇaruddhe nabhastale.
Verse 7 (8.50.7)
tadadbhutamapaśyāma bāṇabhūte nabhasthale | na sma sampatate bhūtaṃ drauṇerdṛṣṭvā parākramam
We saw that marvel: with the sky turned to arrows, no creature could fly through it, such was the prowess we saw in Drona's son.
Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 8.39.7 (tatrāścaryam apaśyāma bāṇabhūte tathāvidhe / na sma saṃpatate bhūmau dṛṣṭvā drauṇeḥ parākramam), which the alignment left unmatched; Wikisource's wording is a recension variant, kept.

sātyakiryatamānastu dharmarājastu pāṇḍavaḥ | tathetarāṇi sainyāni na sma cakruḥ parākramam
Though Satyaki strove, and Yudhishthira the Pandava, and the other armies too, none of them showed any valour.
Note on the text: Removed a stray zero-width joiner inside पाण्डवः (wiki artefact). CE 8.39.9 has sātyakir yatamānas tu dharmarājaś ca pāṇḍavaḥ.
Verse 9 (8.50.9)
lāghavaṃ droṇaputrasya dṛṣṭvā tatra mahārathāḥ | vyasmayanta mahārāja na cainaṃ pratyudīkṣitum
Seeing the lightness of Drona's son's hand, the great car-warriors there were amazed, O great king, and could not even look at him.
Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are CE 8.39.8 (lines a and c); the third line of that CE verse (शेकुस्ते …) is the first line of the next verse here.
Verse 10 (8.50.10)
śekuste sarvarājānastapantamiva bhāskaram | vadhyamāne tataḥ sainye draupadeyā mahārathāḥ
None of those kings could bear to look at him, as one cannot look at the blazing sun; and as the army was being cut down, the great car-warriors, the sons of Draupadi,
Note on the text: Line 1 is the third line of CE 8.39.8 (8e: śekus te sarvarājānas tapantam iva bhāskaram); line 2 is CE 8.39.10a (vadhyamāne tataḥ sainye draupadeyā mahārathāḥ). The sentence continues in the next verse.

sātyakirdharmarājaśca pāñcālāścāpi saṅgatāḥ | tyaktvā mṛtyubhayaṃ ghoraṃ drauṇāyanimupādravan
together with Satyaki, Dharmaraja and the Panchalas, casting off the dreadful fear of death, rushed upon Drona's son.
Note on the text: Corrected द्रौणायनिभुपाद्रवन् → द्रौणायनिमुपाद्रवन् (misprint in Wikisource; भ for म; the critical edition reads drauṇāyanim upādravan). Line 1 = CE 8.39.10c, line 2 = CE 8.39.10e.
Verse 12 (8.50.12)
sātyakiḥ saptaviṃśatyā drauṇiṃ viddhvā śilīmukhaiḥ | punarvivyādha nārācaiḥ saptabhiḥ svarṇabhūṣitaiḥ
Satyaki pierced Drauni with twenty-seven arrows and again with seven gold-adorned iron shafts.
Note on the text: Wikisource reads सप्तविंशत्या (twenty-seven); the critical edition reads pañcaviṃśatyā (twenty-five). Recension variant, kept.

sutasomastu navabhiḥ śatānīkaśca saptabhiḥ | anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā vivyadhustaṃ samantataḥ
Sutasoma with nine, Shatanika with seven, and many other heroes besides, pierced him on every side.
Note on the text: Corrected वहवः → बहवः (misprint in Wikisource; व for ब; the critical edition reads bahavaḥ).
Verse 15 (8.50.15)
sa tu kruddhastato rājannāśīviṣa iva śvasan | sātyakiṃ pañcaviṃśatyā prāvidhyata śilīmukhaiḥ
Then, enraged and hissing like a venomous snake, O king, he pierced Satyaki with twenty-five iron-headed arrows,
Note on the text: Corrected राजन्नाशीविप → राजन्नाशीविष (misprint in Wikisource; प for ष; the critical edition reads āśīviṣa). The first line and the end of the second differ from CE 8.39.14 (so 'tikruddhas …; śilāśitaiḥ); recension variants, kept.
Verse 16 (8.50.16)

Shrutakirti with nine, Sutasoma with five, Shrutakarma with eight, and Pratividhya with three arrows,
Note on the text: Corrected प्रतिबिन्ध्यं → प्रतिविन्ध्यं (misprint in Wikisource; ब for व; the name is Prativindhya, as in verse 13 and CE prativindhyaṃ). Lines 1–2 = CE 8.39.15 (lines a and c).
Verse 17 (8.50.17)
śatānīkaṃ ca navabhirdharmaputraṃ ca pañcabhiḥ | tathetarāṃstataḥ śūrāndvābhyāṃ dvābhyāmatāḍayat | śrutakīrtestathā cāpaṃ ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
Shatanika with nine and the son of Dharma with five; and the other heroes he struck with two arrows each. And with sharp arrows he cut Shrutakirti's bow.
Note on the text: Line 1 = CE 8.39.15e (śatānīkaṃ ca navabhir dharmaputraṃ ca saptabhiḥ; Wikisource has पञ्चभिः for saptabhiḥ, a recension variant, kept); lines 2–3 = CE 8.39.16 (a and c). Three lines, as in the page.
Verse 18 (8.50.18)
athānyaddhanurādāya śrutakīrtirmahārathaḥ | drauṇāyaniṃ tribhirviddhvā vivyādhānyaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
Then Shrutakirti, the great car-warrior, took up another bow, pierced Drona's son with three arrows, and wounded him again with other sharp ones.
Note on the text: Corrected अथान्यद्वनुरादाय → अथान्यद्धनुरादाय and त्रिभिर्विद्व्वा → त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा (misprints in Wikisource; व for ध, and द्व्व for द्ध्व; the critical edition reads athānyad dhanur ādāya … viddhvā).
Verse 19 (8.50.19)
tato drauṇirmahārāja śaravarṣeṇa bhārata | chādayāmāsa tatsainyaṃ samantādbharatarṣabha
Then Drauni, O great king, O Bharata, covered that army on every side with a shower of arrows, O best of the Bharatas.
Note on the text: Corrected भारिष → भारत (misprint in Wikisource; not a word; the critical edition reads bhārata in this line, CE 8.39.18a). The second line differs from CE (samantāc ca śarair nṛpān); recension variant, kept.
Verse 20 (8.50.20)
tataḥ punarameyātmā dharmarājasya kārmukam | drauṇiściccheda vihasanvivyādha ca śaraistribhiḥ
Then once more the immeasurable-souled Drauni, laughing, cut Dharmaraja's bow and pierced him with three arrows.
Verse 21 (8.50.21)
tato dharmasuto rājanpragṛhyānyanmahaddhanuḥ | droṇaputraṃ triṣaṣṭyā tu bāhvorurasi cārpayat
Then the son of Dharma, O king, taking up another great bow, struck Drona's son with sixty-three arrows, and wounded him in both arms and in the chest.
Note on the text: Corrected त्रिपष्टxx ततु → त्रिषष्ट्या तु and चार्पययत् → चार्पयत् (misprint in Wikisource; the page prints the placeholder 'xx' where text was lost, so the evident word त्रिषष्ट्या, 'with sixty-three', is restored by the smallest fix, and the doubled य is dropped). The critical edition (8.39.20: drauṇiṃ vivyādha saptatyā bāhvor urasi cārdayat) reads 'seventy' and a different verb; the vulgate number is kept, but the restoration is a conjecture.
Verse 22 (8.50.22)
sātyakistu tataḥ kruddho drauṇeḥ praharato raṇe | ardhacandreṇa tīkṣṇena dhanuśchittvā'nadadbhṛśam
Then Satyaki, enraged as Drona's son pressed on in battle, cut his bow with a sharp crescent-headed arrow and roared aloud.
Note on the text: Corrected अर्धचन्द्रेणतीक्ष्णेन → अर्धचन्द्रेण तीक्ष्णेन (misprint in Wikisource; a missing word space; the critical edition reads ardhacandreṇa tīkṣṇena).
Verse 23 (8.50.23)
chinnadhanvā tato drauṇiḥ śaktyā śaktimatāṃ varaḥ | sārathiṃ pātayāmāsa śaineyasya rathādrutam
His bow cut, Drauni, best of the mighty, swiftly struck down Shaineya's charioteer from the chariot with a lance.
Verse 24 (8.50.24)
athānyaddhanurādāya droṇaputraḥ pratāpavān | śaineyaṃ śaravarṣeṇa cchādayāmāsa bhārata
Then the valiant son of Drona, taking another bow, covered Shaineya with a shower of arrows, O Bharata.
Note on the text: Corrected अथान्यद्वनुरादाय → अथान्यद्धनुरादाय (misprint in Wikisource; व for ध; the critical edition reads athānyad dhanur ādāya).
Verse 25 (8.50.25)
tasyāśvāḥ pradrutāḥ saṅkhye patite rathasārathau | tatratatraiva dhāvantaḥ samadṛśyanta bhārata
With the charioteer fallen, his horses bolted in the fight and were seen running here and there, O Bharata.

yudhiṣṭhirapurogāstu drauṇiṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ varam | abhyavarṣanta vegena visṛjantaḥ śitāñcharān
Yudhishthira and those led by him rained down on Drauni, the best of weapon-bearers, hurling sharp arrows with speed.
Note on the text: Wikisource reads युधिष्ठिरपुरोगास्तु; the critical edition reads yudhiṣṭhirapurogās te. Recension variant, kept.
Verse 27 (8.50.27)
sahasā patatastānvai kruddharūpānparantapaḥ | prahasanpratijagrāha droṇaputro mahāraṇe
As they suddenly fell upon him in furious guise, the scorcher of foes, Drona's son, met them laughing in that great battle.
Note on the text: Corrected क्रुद्वरूपान् → क्रुद्धरूपान् (misprint in Wikisource; द्व for द्ध). The first line differs from CE 8.39.26a (āgacchamānāṃs tān dṛṣṭvā raudrarūpān); recension variant, kept.
Verse 28 (8.50.28)
tataḥ śaraśatajvālaḥ senākakṣaṃ mahāraṇe | drauṇirdadāha samare kakṣamagnirivotthitaḥ
Then Drauni, flaming with hundreds of arrows, burned the army's flank in the great battle, as a fire risen up burns dry brush.
Note on the text: Wikisource's second line (…कक्षमग्निरिवोत्थितः) and 'mahāraṇe' in line 1 differ from CE 8.39.27 (senākakṣaṃ mahārathaḥ … agnir yathā vane). Recension variants, kept.
Verse 29 (8.50.29)
tadbalaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya droṇaputrapratāpitam | cukṣubhe bharataśreṣṭha tasminneva camūmukhe
That force of Pandu's son, scorched by Drona's son, was thrown into turmoil, O best of the Bharatas, right there at the head of the column.
Note on the text: Line 1 = CE 8.39.28a. Line 2 = CE 8.39.28c's opening (cukṣubhe bharataśreṣṭha) joined to the star line 8.39.028c*0505_01 (tasminn eva camūmukhe); CE's own 28c ends timineva nadīmukham, which Wikisource has two verses later.
Verse 30 (8.50.30)
tadbalaṃ pāṇḍaveyasya droṇaputraḥ śarārciṣā | tāpayanbharataśreṣṭha gabhastibhirivāṃśumān
Drona's son scorched that army of the Pandava with the blaze of his arrows, O best of the Bharatas, as the sun does with his rays.
Note on the text: Not in the CE text proper; it is star passage 8.39.028c*0505_02–03 (tad balaṃ pāṇḍaveyasya droṇaputraśarārciṣā / tāpayan bharataśreṣṭha gabhastibhir ivāṃśumān).
Verse 31 (8.50.31)
tatpacyamānaṃ marṣeṇa brāhmaṇasya ca sāyakaiḥ | kṣubhyate pāṇḍavaṃ sainyaṃ timineva nadīmukham
Tormented by the Brahmin's fury and by his arrows, the Pandava army was thrown into confusion, like a river-mouth stirred by a sea monster.
Note on the text: Not in the CE text proper; it is made of star passage 8.39.028c*0505_04–05 (tat tāpyamānaṃ tīkṣṇāgrair brāhmaṇasya ca sāyakaiḥ / kṣubhyate pāṇḍavaṃ sainyam …; compare also star *0506_01, tad bhajyamānaṃ marṣeṇa brāhmaṇasya śarāhatam) with the closing words timineva nadīmukham from CE 8.39.28c. Wikisource's तत्पच्यमानं मर्षेण is a recension variant of the star wording.
Verse 32 (8.50.32)
dṛṣṭvā caiva mahārāja droṇaputraparākramam | sarvānduryodhanaḥ pārthānhatānyuddhe'bhyamanyata
And seeing the valour of Drona's son, O great king, Duryodhana took all the sons of Pritha to be already slain in the battle.
Note on the text: Corrected युद्वेऽभ्यमन्यत → युद्धेऽभ्यमन्यत (misprint in Wikisource; द्व for द्ध). The corresponding CE verse is 8.39.29 (dṛṣṭvā te ca mahārāja droṇaputraparākramam / nihatān menire sarvān pāṇḍūn droṇasutena vai), which the alignment left unmatched; Wikisource's wording is a recension variant, kept.
Verse 33 (8.50.33)
yudhiṣṭhirastu tvarito drauṇiṃ pīḍya mahāratham | abravīddroṇaputraṃ sa roṣāmarṣasamanvitaḥ
Yudhishthira, quickly pressing the great car-warrior Drauni, spoke to Drona's son, full of anger and indignation.
Note on the text: Wikisource reads पीड्य where CE 8.39.30a reads śliṣya; the second line is close to CE 8.39.30c. Recension variants, kept. Yudhishthira's speech begins in the next verse (CE star 8.39.030d*0507).

Verse 34 (8.50.34)
jānāmi tvāṃ yudhi śreṣṭha vīryavantaṃ balānvitam | kṛtāstraṃ kṛtinaṃ caiva tathā laghuparākramam
I know you, best of fighters, to be strong and powerful, skilled in weapons, accomplished, and swift in prowess.
Note on the text: Not in the CE text proper; it is star passage 8.39.030d*0507_01–02 (jānāmi tvāṃ yudhi śreṣṭhaṃ vīryavantaṃ balānvitam / kṛtāstraṃ kṛtinaṃ caiva tathā laghuparākramam). Removed the stray opening backtick (wiki mark). Speaker supplied from the preceding verse (अब्रवीद् … द्रोणपुत्रम्); the page prints no heading for it.
Verse 35 (8.50.35)
balametadbhavānsarvaṃ pārṣate yadi darśayet | tatastvāṃ balavantaṃ ca kṛtavidyaṃ ca vidmahe
If you were to show all this strength against Parshata, then we would know you to be mighty and learned in arms.
Note on the text: Not in the CE text proper; it is star passage 8.39.030d*0507_03–04 (balam etad bhavān sarvaṃ pārṣate yadi darśayet / tatas tvāṃ balavantaṃ ca kṛtavīryaṃ ca vidmahe). Corrected दर्सयेत् → दर्शयेत् (misprint in Wikisource; स for श; the star reads darśayet). Wikisource's कृतविद्यं for kṛtavīryaṃ is a variant, kept.
Verse 36 (8.50.36)
na hi vai pārṣataṃ dṛṣṭvā samare śatrusūdanam | bhavettava balaṃ kiñcidbravīmi tvāṃ na tu dvijam
For on seeing Parshata, the destroyer of foes, in battle, you would have no strength to speak of. I say this to you, and not to a Brahmin.
Note on the text: Not in the CE text proper; it is star passage 8.39.030d*0507_05–06 (sa hi vai pārṣataṃ dṛṣṭvā samare śatrusūdanam / bhavet tava balaṃ kiṃ cid bravīmi tvāṃ na tu dvija). Corrected पार्पतं → पार्षतं (misprint in Wikisource; प for ष; the star reads pārṣataṃ). Removed the stray closing quote mark (wiki mark) after द्विजम्. Wikisource's न हि for sa hi and द्विजम् for the vocative dvija are variants, kept.
Verse 37 (8.50.37)
naiva nāma tava prītirnaiva nāma kṛtajñatā | yatastvaṃ puruṣavyāghra māmevādya jighāṃsasi
Surely you have no affection and no gratitude, since, O tiger among men, it is me alone that you seek today to kill.
Verse 38 (8.50.38)
brāhmaṇena tapaḥ kāryaṃ śamaśca dama eva ca | kṣatriyeṇa dhanurnāmyaṃ sa bhavānbrāhmaṇabruvaḥ
A Brahmin's work is austerity, tranquillity and self-control; a Kshatriya's is to bend the bow. You are a Brahmin in name only.
Note on the text: Corrected दमएव → दम एव (a missing word space) and धनुर्नाभ्यं → धनुर्नाम्यं (misprints in Wikisource; भ for म; the critical edition reads dhanur nāmyaṃ). Wikisource's शमश्च दम एव च for CE's dānam adhyayanaṃ tathā is a recension variant, kept.
Verse 39 (8.50.39)
miṣataste mahābāho yudhi jeṣyāmi kauravān | kuruṣva samare karma brahmabandho yatheṣṭataḥ
While you look on, mighty-armed one, I shall conquer the Kauravas in battle. Do your work in the fight as you wish, you Brahmin in name only.
Note on the text: Corrected महावाहो → महाबाहो (व for ब) and ब्रह्मबन्धे → ब्रह्मबन्धो (misprints in Wikisource; the vocative of ब्रह्मबन्धु is ब्रह्मबन्धो). यथेष्टतः against CE's brahmabandhur asi dhruvam; recension variant, kept.

evamukto mahārāja droṇaputraḥ smayanniva | yuktaṃ tattvaṃ ca sañcintya nottaraṃ kiñcidabravīt
Thus addressed, O great king, Drona's son, smiling as it were, and weighing what was fitting and true, gave no reply.
Note on the text: Corrected सयन्निव → स्मयन्निव (a dropped म; the critical edition reads smayann iva) and युक्त तत्त्वं → युक्तं तत्त्वं (a dropped anusvara; CE reads yuktatvaṃ tac ca saṃcintya, a variant) — misprints in Wikisource.

Covered by Drona's son, O lord, the son of Pritha quickly withdrew, taking his great army with him.

Verse 43 (8.50.43)
apayāte tatastasmindharmaputre yudhiṣṭhire | droṇaputraḥ sthito rājanpratyādeśānmahātmanaḥ
When Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, had withdrawn, Drona's son, O king, held his ground, because of the great-souled man's rebuke.
Verse 44 (8.50.44)
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājaṃstyaktvā drauṇiṃ mahāhave | prayayau tāvakaṃ sainyaṃ yuktaḥ krūrāya karmaṇe
Then King Yudhishthira, leaving Drauni in that great battle, went off to your army, bent on a cruel task.
Note on the text: Corrected क्रुराय → क्रूराय (misprint in Wikisource; short ु for long ू; the critical edition reads krūrāya).
