Karna Parva · Adhyaya 78

Arjuna Vows to Kill Karna

Cheered by Krishna's words, Arjuna wipes his bowstring, takes up the Gandiva for Karna's destruction, and declares that with Govinda's favour his victory is sure. He sees the Panchalas fleeing and Karna loosing the Bhargava weapon, and vows to kill Karna that very day: Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana will lose all hope, the insults to Draupadi and the Pandavas will be repaid, and his thirteen years of sorrow will end. He closes by praising his own unmatched skill with the bow, his forbearance and his wrath.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.28): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. The critical edition's star passages 8.52.28b*0803_01 and 8.52.28d*0804_01 are not included.

Verse 29 (8.78.29)

adya paśyantu saṃgrāme dhanaṃjayamamarṣaṇam | yudhyantaṃ kauravānsaṃkhye pātayantaṃ ca sūtajam | bhavatsakāśe vakṣye ca punarevātmasaṃstavam

Today let them see the unforgiving Dhananjaya in the battle, fighting the Kauravas and felling the charioteer's son. And in your presence I shall once more sing my own praise.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.29): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. This verse has three lines in the critical edition (29a, 29c, 29e). The critical edition's star passage 8.52.29f*0805_01 is not included.

Verse 30 (8.78.30)

dhanurvede matsamo nāsti loke | parākrame vā mama ko'sti tulyaḥ | ko vāpyanyo matsamo'sti kṣamāyāṃ | tathā krodhe sadṛśo'nyo na me'sti

In the science of the bow there is none in the world my equal; in valour, who is there like me? Who else is my match in forbearance? And in anger there is no other like me.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.30): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. A four-quarter (tristubh) verse: the critical edition prints it in two lines (30a, 30c), each holding two quarters; here each quarter has its own line, as in Wikisource's tristubh verses.

Verse 31 (8.78.31)

ahaṃ dhanuṣmānasurānsurāṃśca | sarvāṇi bhūtāni ca saṃgatāni | svabāhuvīryādgamaye parābhavaṃ | matpauruṣaṃ viddhi paraḥ parebhyaḥ

I, the bowman, by the strength of my own arms, can bring defeat upon the asuras and the gods and upon all beings gathered together; know my manhood to be beyond the highest of others.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.31): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. Tristubh: the critical edition's two lines (31a, 31c) are given as four quarters.

Verse 32 (8.78.32)

śarārciṣā gāṇḍivenāhamekaḥ | sarvānkurūnbāhlikāṃścābhipatya | himātyaye kakṣagato yathāgni- | stathā daheyaṃ sagaṇānprasahya

With the flames of my arrows from the Gandiva, I alone, falling upon all the Kurus and the Bahlikas, would burn them with their hosts by force, as fire that has entered the dry brush at the end of winter burns it.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.32): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. Tristubh: the critical edition's two lines (32a, 32c) are given as four quarters. The critical edition misprints tahā in 32c; it is read and written here as तथा (tathā), the evident word. The word यथाग्निस्तथा is broken across the quarter-break with a hyphen (यथाग्नि- / स्तथा), as Wikisource does where a sandhi crosses a line.

Verse 33 (8.78.33)

pāṇau pṛṣatkā likhitā mamaite | dhanuśca savye nihitaṃ sabāṇam | pādau ca me sarathau sadhvajau ca | na mādṛśaṃ yuddhagataṃ jayanti

On my hand these arrows are inscribed, on my left a bow with its arrow is set, and my feet bear the marks of a chariot and a banner; men like me, once gone into battle, are not conquered."

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.52.33): Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (78) is a stray byte-for-byte copy of its page 79 (all its rows are labelled 8-79-…), so the real adhyaya 78, which falls between the end of Wikisource 77 and the start of Wikisource 79, is supplied from the critical edition (adhyaya 8.52) and written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged. Tristubh: the critical edition's two lines (33a, 33c) are given as four quarters. The critical edition's star passage 8.52.33d*0806_01–04 (narration closing Arjuna's speech) is not included; the star passage 8.53.0*0807_00–04 that introduces the next adhyaya (Dhritarashtra's question) is likewise not included.
