The Armies Clash in Single Combats
Dhritarashtra asks what the duel between Karna and Arjuna was like once the two armies met. Sanjaya describes the terrible clash, in which chariots and elephants destroy one another, and the warriors pair off: Kripa with Shikhandi, Satyaki with Duryodhana, Uttamaujas with Sushena, whose head he cuts off, and Duhshasana with Bhima. Karna wrecks Uttamaujas's chariot, Ashvatthama rescues Kripa, and Bhima scorches the Kaurava host like the midday sun.

Verse 1 (8.79.1)
समागमे पाण्डवसृञ्जयानां । महाभये मामकानामगाधे । धनञ्जये तात रणाय याते । कर्णेन तद्युद्धमथोऽत्र कीदृक् ॥
samāgame pāṇḍavasṛñjayānāṃ | mahābhaye māmakānāmagādhe | dhanañjaye tāta raṇāya yāte | karṇena tadyuddhamatho'tra kīdṛk
When the Pandavas and the Srinjayas had come together in that battle, so fearful and unfathomable for my own men, and Dhananjaya had gone out to the fight, my dear Sanjaya, what was that duel with Karna like there?
Note on the text: Speaker: the bracketed heading [धृतराष्ट्र उवाच (row 8-79-1x) had been folded into the input's text; removed from the Sanskrit and made the speaker, and the stray brackets and the double danda (।।]) removed. Corrected तद्युद्व → तद्युद्ध (misprint in Wikisource; the final conjunct is broken; CE tad yuddham). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is the CE star passage 8.53.0*0807_01–04 (printed before 8.53.1, with its heading dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca at *0807_00): line 3 is identical; lines 1, 2 and 4 are recension variants (Wikisource समागमे, महाभये मामकानामगाधे and कर्णेन तद्युद्धमथोऽत्र कीदृक् for the CE's mahābhaye pāṇḍavasṛñjayānāṃ, mahābhaye māmakānām agādhe and babhūva tad yuddham atho nu kīdṛk), Wikisource's reading kept. ADHYAYA NOTE: this page (Wikisource adhyaya 79) is the real text of its adhyaya (CE 8.53). The page 078 carries an identical stray copy of this page's text (rows 8-79-1 to 8-79-17 and the colophon of adhyaya 79), so the 078 input aligned to CE 8.53 and this input shows no CE match. The heading line द्वन्द्वयुद्धम्।। 1 ।। is a chapter-summary heading, not a verse. The page has no second text block after its colophon; only a gloss list follows it (8-79-10 पाञ्चालेयं पाञ्चालीतनयं नाकुलिम्; the adhyaya name), which is not added.

Their hosts, with their great banners, flourishing in the battle and closely massed, roared loudly with the din of the kettledrums, like rain-clouds driven by the winds in the monsoon.
Note on the text: Corrected भेरीनिरादोन्मुखराण्यंगर्ज-- → भेरीनिनादोन्मुखराण्यगर्जन् (misprint in Wikisource; निरादो for निनादो and a stray anusvara before ग; the CE reads bherīninādair mukharāṇy agarjan in 8.53.1d*0808_01). The page splits a sandhi across the line break (राण्यंगर्ज-- । / न्मेघा); written here with the word-end resolved (अगर्जन् । मेघा), the line division kept. Lines 1–2 = CE 8.53.1a (Wikisource महाध्वजानि, सुसङ्गतानि for CE bṛhaddhvajāni, samāgatāni, recension variants); lines 3–4 = the CE star passage 8.53.1d*0808_01–02.

The battle was like a storm: great elephants were its crowding clouds and weapons its water; the din of instruments, wheel-rims and palms was its thunder, bright golden weapons its lightning, and arrows, swords, iron shafts and the great missiles its streams of rain.
Note on the text: Lines 1–3 = CE 8.53.2ab and the first half of 2c (Wikisource विद्युतं for CE vaidyutaṃ); line 4 शरासिनाराचमहास्त्रधारम् is Wikisource's own where the CE reads mahārathair āvṛtaśabdavac ca (a recension variant), Wikisource's reading kept.

Many chariots in concert surrounded a single chariot and brought it to its death; in the same way one warrior brought one chariot-fighter, and the foremost of chariot-warriors, to death, and one chariot did so to many chariots.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); its four lines are the star passage 8.53.3d*0809_01–04 (ekaṃ rathaṃ saṃparivārya mṛtyuṃ … rathān anekān), with the same words. The page splits a sandhi across the line break (रथाग्र्यां-- । / स्तथा); written here with the sandhi resolved (रथाग्र्यान् । तथा), the line division kept.

Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); its four lines are the star passage 8.53.3d*0809_05–08, with the same words. The page splits a sandhi across the line break twice (कञ्चि-- । / त्कश्चिद्रती and कश्चि-- । / द्रथान्); written here with the word-ends resolved (कञ्चित् । कश्चिद्रथी; कश्चित् । रथान्), the line division kept.

Note on the text: पाञ्चालेयम् is glossed on the page (8-79-10) as Panchali's (Draupadi's) son, Nakula's son; that is Shatanika himself.
Verse 11 (8.79.11)

Note on the text: Line 1 and lines 3–4 correspond to CE 8.53.9a and 9c (Wikisource भारतं तु for CE bhāratī ca; the CE's line 9a continues with saṃśaptakānāṃ pṛtanā samṛddhā, which Wikisource lacks; recension variants); line 2 व्यात्ताननं क्रूरमिवान्तकाभम् corresponds to the star passage 8.53.9d*0811_01. Wikisource's reading kept.

Note on the text: Corrected समुज्जहे → समुज्जह्रे (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct ह्र is broken, leaving a form that is not the perfect of हृ; CE samujjahre).
