Arjuna Slays Ten Sons of Dhritarashtra

Wishing to rescue Bhima, Arjuna scatters the Kaurava host with his arrows, covering the field with elephants, horses and chariots until it looks like the river Vaitarani. The Kurus abandon Bhima and flee; Arjuna consults him, tells him that Yudhishthira is well, and moves on. Ten younger sons of Dhritarashtra then surround him, and he cuts down their banners and bows and strikes off all their heads.

rājankurūṇāṃ prabarairbalairbhīmamabhidrutam | majjantamiva kaunteyamujjihīrṣurdhanañjayaḥ

O king, when the foremost forces of the Kurus had fallen upon Bhima, Dhananjaya, wishing to lift the son of Kunti out as though he were sinking,

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.58.1): Wikisource has lost the first half of each line (printed as "xxxxxxxxxxx"). The surviving words प्रबरैर्वलैर्भीममभिद्रुतम् and कौन्तेयमुस्थिहीर्षुर्धनञ्जयः are the CE's (rājan kurūṇāṃ pravarair balair bhīmam abhidrutam / majjantam iva kaunteyam ujjihīrṣur dhanaṃjayaḥ), with misprints corrected (वलैर् → बलैर्; मुस्थिहीर्षुः → मुज्जिहीर्षुः). The page also prints a stray damaged line "सङ्कुतxxxxx ।। 1 ।।" before the table (a chapter-synopsis line, not a verse); it is dropped.

Verse 2 (8.84.2)

vimṛdya sūtaputrasya senāṃ bhārata sāyakaiḥ | prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya paravīrāndhanañjayaḥ

having crushed the Suta's son's army with his arrows, O Bharata, sent enemy heroes to the world of death.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.58.2): Wikisource has lost the first words of each line (printed as "xxxxxxxxx"). Restored from 8.58.2 (vimṛdya sūtaputrasya senāṃ bhārata sāyakaiḥ / prāhiṇon mṛtyulokāya paravīrān dhanaṃjayaḥ); the surviving words सेनां मारत सायकैः and परवीरान्धनञ्जयः are the CE's (मारत is a misprint for भारत).

Verse 3 (8.84.3)

tato'syāmbaramāvṛtya śarajālāni bhāgaśaḥ | adṛśyanta tathānye ca nijaghnustava vāhinīm

Then nets of arrows, covering the sky above him, were seen in parts; and others were seen too, and they struck down your host.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (8.58.3): the first half of line 1 is lost on the page (printed as "xxxxxxxxxxx"); restored from 8.58.3a (tato 'syāmbaram āvṛtya śarajālāni bhāgaśaḥ). Line 2 is Wikisource's own and is kept (निजघ्नुस्तव वाहिनीम् for the CE's nighnantas tava vāhinīm, a recension variant).

Verse 4 (8.84.4)

Filling the sky, where flocks of birds fly, with his arrows, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya became the destroyer of the Kurus, O great king.

Note on the text: Corrected कुरूणामन्तकोऽमयत् → कुरूणामन्तकोऽभवत् (misprint in Wikisource; अमयत् is not a word; CE antako 'bhavat).

The earth was strewn with the chariots of the fighters, with their poles, wheels, axles and arrows, some without horses, some with, some with charioteers, some with charioteers slain.

Note on the text: Line 1 reads भल्लैश्च where the CE has bhaṅgaiś ca; kept as a recension variant.

enraged, driven on by cruel mahouts, charged at Arjuna; four hundred of the foremost chariots fell, struck down by Kiritin.

Note on the text: Corrected क्रुरैर् → क्रूरैर् (misprint in Wikisource; the vowel must be long; क्रूर "cruel"). Line 1 is a variant of 8.58.9e (the CE has kruddhair mahāmātraiḥ); line 2 is a variant of 8.58.10a.

Verse 14 (8.84.14)

With slain elephants, men and horses, with chariots broken in many ways, with lifeless fighters stripped of weapons, engines and mail, and with flung-away arms, Phalguna strewed the path.

Note on the text: Three lines: 8.58.12a, 12c and 12e (विशस्त्रयन्त्रकवचैः, अपविद्ध for the CE's viśastrapatrakavacaiḥ, apaviddha-).

Verse 15 (8.84.15)

visphāritaṃ ca gāṇḍīvamatyāsīdbhairavasvanam | sughoṣaṃ vajraniṣpeṣaṃ stanayanniva toyadaḥ

And the stretched Gandiva sounded dreadfully, with a fine sound and a crash like the thunderbolt's, like a cloud thundering.

Note on the text: A vulgate wording of 8.58.13 (the CE has vyasphūrjayac ca gāṇḍīvaṃ sumahad bhairavasvanam / ghoro vajraviniṣpeṣaḥ stanayitnor ivāmbare); the automatic alignment did not match it.

Verse 16 (8.84.16)

tataḥ prādīryata camūrdhanañjayaśarāhatā | mahāvātasamāviddhā mahānauriva sāgare

Allowed to go by Bhimasena, Dhananjaya then went on, O Bharata, making earth and sky resound with the roar of his chariot.

Note on the text: Corrected नादन्रथघोषेण → नादयन्रथघोषेण (misprint in Wikisource; नादन् is not a form; a dropped य, CE nādayan).

Verse 25 (8.84.25)

te tamabhyardayanbāṇairulkābhiriva kuñjaram | ātateṣvasanā vīrā nṛtyanta iva bhārata

tathānye prāṇadanmūḍhāḥ parāṅmukhamivārjunam

Others, in their folly, roared as though Arjuna had turned away.

Note on the text: A single line (labelled 8-84-28a on the page), a vulgate variant of 8.58.25c (tatas te prādravañ śūrāḥ parāṅmukharathe 'rjune): Wikisource reads प्राणदन्मूढाः, "the deluded roared", for the CE's prādravañ śūrāḥ, "the heroes fled".
