Arjuna and Bhima Break the Kaurava Host

Arjuna drives toward Karna's chariot and is attacked first by ninety Samshaptaka chariot-warriors, whom he kills, and then by the Kuru host with a force of Mleccha elephants, which he shatters with his arrows. Bhima joins him and wrecks the surviving horses and the elephant division with his mace. The Kauravas, routed, flee to Karna for refuge, and Karna rallies them and turns on the Panchalas.

Verse 1 (8.85.1)

तमायान्तं महावेगैरश्वैः कपिवरध्वजम् । युद्धायाभ्यद्रवन्वीराः कुरूणां नवतीं रथाः ॥

tamāyāntaṃ mahāvegairaśvaiḥ kapivaradhvajam | yuddhāyābhyadravanvīrāḥ kurūṇāṃ navatīṃ rathāḥ

As he came on with his swift horses, the one whose banner bore the best of monkeys, ninety chariots of the Kurus, all heroes, rushed upon him to give battle.

Note on the text: Corrected दीराः → वीराः (misprint in Wikisource; द for व, 'dīrāḥ' is not a word; the critical edition reads vīrāḥ). Adhyaya note: checked against the raw page (a table of 61 verse rows labelled 8-85-1 to 8-85-61, with the heading सञ्जय उवाच before verse 1, the colophon of adhyaya 85, and the section heading सङ्कुलयुद्धम्); every label carries 85, the text is this adhyaya's own (critical edition 8.59) and no verse is repeated from another adhyaya of the parva. Below the colophon the page prints only a variant-reading note (8-85-12 मुसलैर्भिन्दिपालैश्च इति झ.पाठः) and a numbering line, no second block; neither is added. The two lines are the critical edition's 8.59.1a and 8.59.1c.

Verse 2 (8.85.2)

कृत्वा संशप्तका घोरं शपथं पारलौकिकम् । परिवव्रुर्नरव्याघ्रा नरव्याघ्रं रणेऽर्जुनम् ॥

Having sworn a dreadful oath, binding even in the next world, the Samshaptakas, tigers among men, surrounded Arjuna, that tiger among men, in the battle.

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's star passage 8.59.1d*0903_01 (reading ghorāñ śapathān brāhmalaukikān for घोरं शपथं पारलौकिकम्); line 2 is its 8.59.1e.
