Omens in the Thirty-Sixth Year

In the thirty-sixth year after the war, Yudhishthira sees terrible omens on earth, in the sky and in the heavenly bodies. Not long afterwards he hears that the Vrishnis, by a brahmin's curse, have fallen upon one another with pestles and perished, and that Krishna and Balarama have been released from life. The Pandavas can hardly believe it and sit down, struck with grief.

Verse 1 (16.1.1)

ṣaṭtriṃśe tvatha saṃprāpte varṣe kauravanandanaḥ | dadarśa viparītāni nimittāni yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

When the thirty-sixth year had come, Yudhishthira, the delight of the Kurus, saw omens of ill, all contrary to the natural order.

Note on the text: Corrected त्वथ् → त्वथ (misprint in Wikisource; stray virama on the final थ). Corrected कौरवन्दनः → कौरवनन्दनः (misprint in Wikisource; dropped akshara न, the pāda is a syllable short; CE reads kauravanandanaḥ). Corrected युधिष्टिरः → युधिष्ठिरः (misprint in Wikisource; ष्ट for ष्ठ; CE reads yudhiṣṭhiraḥ). The page's first row ran together the invocation जयमुदीरयेत्), which is dropped as not verse text (cf. CE star passage 16,000.000*0001), and the heading 'वैशम्पायन उवाच'.

Verse 2 (16.1.2)

vavurvātāśca nirghātā rūkṣāḥ śarkaravarṣiṇaḥ | apasavyāni śakunā maṇḍalāni pracakrire

Harsh winds blew, with crashing thunderclaps, raining gravel; and the birds wheeled in circles keeping to the left, the inauspicious way.

Verse 3 (16.1.3)

pratyagūhurmahānadyo diśo nīhārasaṃvṛtāḥ | ulkāścāṅgāravarṣiṇyaḥ prāpatangaganādbhuvi

The great rivers flowed backwards, the quarters were shrouded in mist, and meteors raining embers fell from the sky to the earth.

Verse 4 (16.1.4)

ādityo rajasā rājansamavacchannamaṇḍalaḥ | viraśmirudaye nityaṃ kabandhaiḥ samalaṅkṛtaḥ

O king, the sun, its disc veiled in dust, rose every day without rays, and headless trunks were seen all about it.

Note on the text: Corrected समवच्छन्नगनाद्भुवि → समवच्छन्नमण्डलः (misprint in Wikisource; the line's ending was copied from the previous verse; CE reads samavacchannamaṇḍalaḥ).

Verse 5 (16.1.5)

pariveṣāśca dṛśyante dāruṇāśca candrasūryayoḥ | trivarṇāḥ śyāmarukṣāntāstathā bhasmāruṇaprabhāḥ

Dreadful haloes were seen around the moon and the sun, three-coloured, dark and rough at the edges, with an ashen-red glow.

Note on the text: Corrected दारुणाश्च द्रसूर्ययोः → दारुणाश्च चन्द्रसूर्ययोः (misprint in Wikisource; dropped letters चन्; CE reads candrasūryayoḥ).

Verse 6 (16.1.6)

ete cānye ca bahava utpātā bhayaśaṃsinaḥ | dṛśyante jagato nātha divamāroḍhumicchati

These and many other omens that foretold terror were seen, as the Lord of the world wished to ascend to heaven.

Note on the text: Corrected भयसंसिनः → भयशंसिनः (misprint in Wikisource; स for श; CE reads bhayaśaṃsinaḥ). Line 1 = CE 16,001.006a; line 2 = star line 16,001.006d*0002_01 (the star line reads 'jagato nāthe', 'when the Lord of the world …'; translated in that sense).

Verse 7 (16.1.7)

yasya prasādāddharmo'yaṃ kṛte yadvatkalāvapi | pāṇḍavāśca mahābhāga yuktāstu yaśasā'nagha

He by whose grace this Dharma stands even in the Kali age as it did in the Krita; and the Pandavas, O blessed and sinless one, are endowed with glory.

Note on the text: Removed the stray backtick, closing quote and doubled danda (`…।।') that bracket a vulgate-only couplet on the page. Not in the critical edition's numbered text: star passage 16,001.006d*0003_01-02 (CE: 'pāṇḍavās tu mahābhāgā yuktās tu yaśasānaghāḥ').

Verse 8 (16.1.8)

kasya cittvatha kālasya kururājo viśaṅkitaḥ | śuśrāva vṛṣṇicakrasya musalotsādanaṃ kṛtam

After some time the Kuru king, full of foreboding, heard that the host of the Vrishnis had been destroyed by the pestle.

Verse 9 (16.1.9)

vimuktaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca śrutvā rāmaṃ ca pāṇḍavaḥ | samānīyābravīdbhrātṝnkiṃ kariṣyāma ityuta

Hearing that Vasudeva and Rama had been released from life, the Pandava called his brothers together and said, 'What are we to do?'

Note on the text: Corrected भ्रातृन्कि करिष्याम → भ्रातॄन्किं करिष्याम (misprint in Wikisource; short ऋ for long ॠ and dropped anusvara; CE reads bhrātṝn kiṃ kariṣyāma).

Verse 10 (16.1.10)

parasparaṃ samāsādya brahmadaṇḍabalātkṛtān | vṛṣṇīnvinaṣṭāṃste śrutvā vyathitāḥ pāṇḍavā bhṛśam

The Pandavas were deeply distressed to hear that the Vrishnis, by the force of a brahmin's curse, had fallen upon one another and perished.

Note on the text: Corrected वृष्णिन्विनष्टास्ते → वृष्णीन्विनष्टांस्ते (misprint in Wikisource; accusative plurals वृष्णीन् and विनष्टान् (before ते) were misprinted; CE reads vṛṣṇīn vinaṣṭāṃs te).

Verse 11 (16.1.11)

nidhanaṃ vāsudevasya samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam | vīrā na śraddadhustasya vināśaṃ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ

The death of Vasudeva was like the drying up of the ocean; the heroes could not believe in the destruction of the wielder of the Sharnga bow.

Verse 12 (16.1.12)

mausalaṃ te samāśritya duḥkhaśokasamanvitāḥ | viṣaṇṇā hatasaṃkalpāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan

Dwelling in mind on the slaughter by the pestles, the Pandavas, overcome with grief and sorrow, dejected and their purpose broken, sat down.

Note on the text: Corrected विष्ण्णा → विषण्णा (misprint in Wikisource; the ष and ण are transposed; CE reads viṣaṇṇā). Corrected हतसंकल्पाःकि पाण्डवाः → हतसंकल्पाः पाण्डवाः (misprint in Wikisource; stray letters कि (a footnote mark) run into the text; CE reads hatasaṃkalpāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ). The page's footnote glosses 'मौसलम्' as 'the slaughter done by the pestle'.
