Yudhishthira Resolves on the Rajasuya and Sends for Krishna

After Narada's words Yudhishthira cannot stop thinking of the Rajasuya. Vaishampayana describes his just rule: helped by his brothers, he makes the kingdom prosper and free of fear, and because no one hates him he is called Ajatashatru. His ministers, friends, priests and allies urge him to perform the sacrifice, but before deciding he resolves to consult Krishna. His messenger Indrasena brings Krishna from Dvaraka to Indraprastha, where the Pandavas and Kunti welcome him, and Yudhishthira asks him for honest counsel free of flattery.

hariścandraṃ ca rājarṣiṃ rocamānaṃ viśeṣataḥ | yajvānaṃ yajñamāhartuṃ rājasūyamiyeṣa saḥ

and above all the royal sage Harishchandra, a sacrificer who shone with special splendour, he wished to undertake the Rajasuya sacrifice.

Note on the text: Corrected राजर्षि → राजर्षिं (misprint in Wikisource; the accusative needs the anusvara, as in the critical edition, rājarṣiṃ) and रोजमानं → रोचमानं (misprint in Wikisource; ज for च — the participle is rocamānaṃ, "shining", as in the critical edition).

Note on the text: Corrected द्रेष्टा → द्वेष्टा (misprint in Wikisource; र for व — the word is dveṣṭā, "one who hates", as in the critical edition). Corresponds to CE 2.12.8ab–cd (missed by the automatic alignment).

Janardana came to the son of Pritha in Indraprastha. In the palace he was honoured as a father is honoured by his cousin, the King of Dharma,

Note on the text: Corrected पितृवद्धात्रा → पितृवद्भ्रात्रा (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped भ — the commentary printed with the text glosses भ्रात्रा, "by his cousin", and the critical edition reads bhrātrā; पितृवत् is kept against its bhrātṛvat as a recension variant). Verse 55 (2.13.55)

प्रार्थितो राजसूयो मे न चासौ केवलेप्सया । प्राप्यते येन तत्ते हि विदितं कृष्ण सर्वशः ॥

prārthito rājasūyo me na cāsau kevalepsayā | prāpyate yena tatte hi viditaṃ kṛṣṇa sarvaśaḥ

I have set my heart on the Rajasuya, but it is not won by wishing alone. By what means it is won, Krishna, is known to you in every respect.

Verse 56 (2.13.56)

यस्मिन्सर्वं सम्भवति यश्च सर्वत्र पूज्यते । यश्च सर्वेश्वरो राजा राजसूयं स विन्दति ॥

yasminsarvaṃ sambhavati yaśca sarvatra pūjyate | yaśca sarveśvaro rājā rājasūyaṃ sa vindati

He in whom all things are possible, who is honoured everywhere, and who is lord of all — that king attains the Rajasuya.

Verse 57 (2.13.57)

तं राजसूयं सुहृदः कार्यमाहुः समेत्य मे । तत्र मे निश्चिततमं तव कृष्ण गिरा भवेत् ॥

taṃ rājasūyaṃ suhṛdaḥ kāryamāhuḥ sametya me | tatra me niścitatamaṃ tava kṛṣṇa girā bhavet

My friends have come together and told me that I should perform the Rajasuya. But in this, Krishna, your word will be the most decisive for me.

Verse 58 (2.13.58)

केचिद्धि सौहृदादेव न दोषं परिचक्षते । स्वार्थहेतोस्तथैवान्ये प्रियमेव वदन्त्युत ॥

keciddhi sauhṛdādeva na doṣaṃ paricakṣate | svārthahetostathaivānye priyameva vadantyuta

For some, out of friendship alone, do not point out the faults; others likewise, for their own gain, say only what is pleasing.

Note on the text: Corrected सौहृदा देवे → सौहृदादेव (misprint in Wikisource; a misdivided सौहृदात् एव, "out of friendship alone" — the critical edition reads sauhṛdād eva).

priyameva parīpsante kecidātmani yaddhitam | evamprāyāśca dṛśyante janavādāḥ prayojane

Some seek only what is pleasant, whatever seems good to themselves; such, for the most part, are the opinions people offer on any undertaking.

tvaṃ tu hetūnatītyaitānkāmakrodhau vyudasya ca | paramaṃ yatkṣamaṃ loke yathāvadvaktumarhasi
