Vishnu Slays Kalanemi; Earth Asks to Be Relieved

Yudhishthira asks Bhishma to tell him again how Vishnu came to be born among the Vrishnis. Bhishma begins with the ancient war over Taraka in the Krita age: when the Daityas, led by the hundred-armed Kalanemi, rout the gods, Vishnu comes on Garuda, cuts off Kalanemi's heads and arms, restores the gods to their places and goes to sleep in Brahma's world for thirty-six hundred thousand years. Waking at the end of the Dvapara age, he goes to the assembly of the gods on Meru, where Earth complains that she can no longer bear the weight of kings, armies and wicked Daityas; Narayana resolves to live on earth.
