The Birth of Krishna and His Childhood in the Cattle Settlement
Bhishma tells how Vishnu commanded the gods and other beings to be born among men and was himself born in the line of Yadu, while the oceans trembled, fires blazed up and the gods rained flowers; Indra comes to honor the child and returns to heaven. Krishna grows up in Nandagopa's household: he overturns the cart with his foot, Putana and a partisan of Kamsa are slain, he is caught eating the butter, tied to a mortar and uproots the two Arjuna trees. Krishna and Sankarshana grow into calf-herds of seven, roaming the forest in cowherd dress, and then move to Vrindavana.
