Bhima's Fury Restrained by Bhishma

Shishupala praises Jarasandha, who refused to fight Krishna as beneath him, and condemns the way Krishna, Bhima and Arjuna entered his city by a side way disguised as brahmins, refused his hospitality and killed him. He sneers at Bhishma as womanish and old. Bhima rises in terrible anger, but Bhishma catches hold of him and calms him with many words. Shishupala, unshaken, laughs and dares Bhishma to let Bhima loose, and Bhishma tells Bhima that the Chedi king's defiance is Krishna's own design.

keśavena kṛtaṃ karma jarāsandhavadhe tadā | bhīmasenārjunābhyāṃ ca kastatsādhviti manyate

What Keshava did, together with Bhimasena and Arjuna, in the killing of Jarasandha: who would think that right?

Verse 3 (2.65.3)

अद्वारेण प्रविष्टेन छद्मना ब्रह्मवादिना । दृष्टः प्रभावः कृष्णेन जरासन्धस्य भूपतेः ॥

advāreṇa praviṣṭena chadmanā brahmavādinā | dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaḥ kṛṣṇena jarāsandhasya bhūpateḥ

Entering not by the gate but in disguise, posing as a brahmin, Krishna saw the power of King Jarasandha.

"Please eat," Jarasandha said to Krishna, Bhima and Dhananjaya, O Kauravya; yet it was Krishna who did the wrong.

Verse 6 (2.65.6)

yadyayaṃ jagataḥ kartā yathainaṃ mūrkha manyase | kasmānna brāhmaṇaṃ samyagātmānamavagacchati

If he is the maker of the world, as you, fool, believe him to be, why does he not rightly own himself a brahmin?

Verse 7 (2.65.7)

इदं त्वाश्चर्यभूतं मे यदिमे पाण्डवास्त्वया । अपकृष्टाः सतां मार्गान्मन्यन्ते तच्च साध्विति ॥

athavā naitadāścaryaṃ yeṣāṃ tvamasi bhārata | strīsadharmā ca vṛddhaśca sarvārthānāṃ pradarśakaḥ

Or rather it is no wonder, O Bharata, since you, who are like a woman, and old, are their guide in all matters.

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rūkṣaṃ rūkṣākṣaraṃ bahu | cukopa balināṃ śreṣṭho bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān

Hearing those words of his, many and harsh, rough in every syllable, Bhimasena, the valiant, the best of the strong, flew into a rage.

Note on the text: Corrected चकोप → चुकोप (misprint in Wikisource; the perfect of kup reduplicates with u; CE cukopa).

Verse 12 (2.65.12)

दन्तान्सन्दशतस्तस्य कोपाद्ददृशुराननम् । युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि कालस्येव जिघत्सतः ॥

dantānsandaśatastasya kopāddadṛśurānanam | yugānte sarvabhūtāni kālasyeva jighatsataḥ

Verse 13 (2.65.13)

उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन जग्राहैनं मनस्विनम् । भीष्म एव महाबाहुर्महासेनमिवेश्वरः ॥

utpatantaṃ tu vegena jagrāhainaṃ manasvinam | bhīṣma eva mahābāhurmahāsenamiveśvaraḥ

As that proud man leapt up with force, mighty-armed Bhishma himself caught hold of him, as the Lord Shiva held back Mahasena.

Note on the text: Corrected मनस्विन् → मनस्विनम् (misprint in Wikisource; the object of जग्राह needs the accusative; CE manasvinam).

Note on the text: Corrected तस्व → तस्य (misprint in Wikisource; व for य; CE tasya).

Verse 15 (2.65.15)

नातिचक्राम भीष्मस्य स हि वाक्यमरिन्दमः । समुद्वृत्तो घनापाये वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥

nāticakrāma bhīṣmasya sa hi vākyamarindamaḥ | samudvṛtto ghanāpāye velāmiva mahodadhiḥ

For that tamer of foes did not overstep Bhishma's word, as the great ocean, swollen at the end of the rains, does not overstep its shore.

Verse 16 (2.65.16)

शिशुपालस्तु सङ्क्रुद्धे भीमसेने जनाधिप । नाकम्पत तदा वीरः पौरुषे स्वे व्यवस्थितः ॥

śiśupālastu saṅkruddhe bhīmasene janādhipa | nākampata tadā vīraḥ pauruṣe sve vyavasthitaḥ

But Shishupala, O lord of men, did not tremble then, though Bhimasena was in a fury; the hero stood firm in his own manhood.

Note on the text: Corrected पौरुषे व्यवस्थितः → पौरुषे स्वे व्यवस्थितः (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped word leaves the line a syllable short; CE pauruṣe sve vyavasthitaḥ).

Verse 17 (2.65.17)

"Let him go, Bhishma! Let the kings watch him burn in my might like a moth in a fire."

Note on the text: Corrected नराधिपः → नराधिपाः (misprint in Wikisource; the subject of the plural पश्यन्तु must be plural; CE narādhipāḥ). Wikisource prints no heading; the verse is Shishupala's own words, announced in the verse before.

naiṣā cedipaterbuddhiryattvāmāhvayate'cyutam | bhīmasena mahābāho kṛṣṇasyaiva viniścayaḥ

"It is not the Chedi king's own thought, that he challenges you, unshaken one. It is Krishna's own resolve, mighty-armed Bhimasena."

Note on the text: Removed stray wiki marks (backtick and quote mark). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); the CE records it only as an interpolation, star passage 379* (after 2.39.20); compare CE 2.41.1, which the next adhyaya gives in full. Wikisource prints no heading; the verse is Bhishma's reply, announced in the verse before, so it is given to Bhishma (the input carried Vaishampayana).
