The Birth of Shishupala and Krishna's Promise

To restrain Bhima, Bhishma tells the story of Shishupala's birth. He was born into the Chedi royal house with three eyes and four arms, braying like an ass, and his parents meant to abandon him until a bodiless voice told them to rear him: his slayer was already born, and would be known when the child's extra arms fell off and his third eye sank away in that man's lap. Thousands of kings held the child without effect, but when Balarama and Krishna visited their aunt in Chedi, the signs came to pass in Krishna's lap. The frightened mother won from Krishna a promise to pardon a hundred of her son's offences, and Bhishma ends by saying that this boon is what makes Shishupala so bold.

Verse 1 (2.66.1)

चेदिराजकुले जातस्त्र्यक्ष एष चतुर्भुजः । रासभारावसदृशं ररास च ननाद च ॥

cedirājakule jātastryakṣa eṣa caturbhujaḥ | rāsabhārāvasadṛśaṃ rarāsa ca nanāda ca

Born into the royal house of Chedi, this man had three eyes and four arms, and he brayed like an ass and roared.

Note on the text: Corrected जातख्यक्ष → जातस्त्र्यक्ष (misprint in Wikisource; ख्य for स्त्र्य, "born with three eyes"; CE jātas tryakṣa). Wikisource's ररास ("brayed") differs from the CE's rurāva; kept as printed.

Verse 2 (2.66.2)

तेनास्य मातापितरौ त्रेसतुस्तौ सबान्धवौ । वैकृतं तस्य तौ दृष्ट्वा त्यागायाकुरुतां मतिम् ॥

tenāsya mātāpitarau tresatustau sabāndhavau | vaikṛtaṃ tasya tau dṛṣṭvā tyāgāyākurutāṃ matim

At this his mother and father and their kinsmen were terrified, and seeing his deformity, the two resolved to abandon him.

Note on the text: Corrected तस्यत → तस्य (misprint in Wikisource; a stray त makes the line a syllable too long).

Verse 3 (2.66.3)

ततः सभार्यं नृपतिं सामात्यं सपुरोहितम् । चिन्तासंमूढहृदयं वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ॥

tataḥ sabhāryaṃ nṛpatiṃ sāmātyaṃ sapurohitam | cintāsaṃmūḍhahṛdayaṃ vāguvācāśarīriṇī

Then, as the king sat with his wife, his ministers and his priest, his heart bewildered with worry, a bodiless voice spoke to him:

Note on the text: Corrected अशरीरेणी → अशरीरिणी (misprint in Wikisource; े for ि; CE aśarīriṇī).

eṣa te nṛpate putraḥ śrīmāñjāto balādhikaḥ | tasmādasmānna bhetavyamavyagraḥ pāhi vai śiśum

"This son of yours, O king, is born fortunate and surpassing in strength. So do not fear him; rear the child with a quiet mind."

Note on the text: Wikisource prints no heading; the verse is the bodiless voice's speech, announced in the verse before.

Verse 5 (2.66.5)

"You will not be the cause of his death, nor has his time yet come. The one who will kill him with a weapon is already born, O lord of men."

Note on the text: The voice's speech continues (no heading in Wikisource). Wikisource's second line (यश्च शस्त्रेण हन्ताऽस्य) differs in wording from the CE's (mṛtyur hantāsya śastreṇa); kept as printed.

"Be he a blessed god or some other being, I wish to hear truly: who will be the death of this son of mine?"

Note on the text: The mother's speech continues (no heading in Wikisource). Line 1 is in the CE only as an interpolation, star passage 380* (after 2.40.7); line 2 = CE 2.40.8ab. (Wikisource's verse division runs half a verse behind the CE's from verse 8 to verse 14, because of the added line in verse 8.)
