Shakuni's Challenge
The Pandavas enter the assembly hall and take their seats among the kings, and Shakuni invites Yudhishthira to begin the game. Yudhishthira condemns gambling as deceit without valour and cites the sage Asita Devala, but Shakuni answers that every contest is won by superior skill and dares him to withdraw if he is afraid. Bound by his vow never to refuse a challenge, Yudhishthira asks who will play against him; Duryodhana offers to supply the stakes with Shakuni throwing for him, and Yudhishthira, though he finds this unfair, lets the game begin.
