The Hunters Reveal Duryodhana

Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra how Kripa, Ashvatthama and Kritavarma find Duryodhana lying in the lake, urge him to rise and fight, and hear Ashvatthama swear to destroy the Panchalas. Hunters who bring meat to Bhima overhear them and carry the news to the Pandavas. Yudhishthira and his army hasten to the Dvaipayana lake, and the three warriors withdraw to a banyan tree and sit there, unsure of what will follow.

Verse 1 (9.30.1)

muhūrtādiva rājendra sarvaṃ śūnyamadṛśyata | mattavāraṇasaṃghuṣṭaṃ śibiraṃ vidrute bale

In a moment, O king of kings, everything looked deserted: the camp that had rung with the trumpeting of maddened elephants now stood empty, for the army had fled.

Note on the text: Removed the stray backtick and the speaker heading "सञ्जय उवाच" that had slipped into the verse text (the heading is made the speaker; the page prints it as row 9-30-1x). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records these two lines as the star passage 9.29.0*0180_01–02, introduced by its speaker line *0180_00.

Verse 2 (9.30.2)

yatra śabdena mahatā nānvabudhyanmahārathāḥ | tatra śabdaṃ na śṛṇumo manuṣyasyāpi kasyacit

In the very place where the great warriors once could not hear one another for the enormous din, we now heard no sound even of a single human being.

Note on the text: Removed the stray closing quote mark after कस्यचित्. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records these two lines as the star passage 9.29.0*0180_03–04.

Verse 4 (9.30.4)

kṛtavarmā kṛpaścaiva droṇaputraśca vīryavān | duryodhanaśca mandātmā rājā kimakarottadā

What did Kritavarma and Kripa, and the mighty son of Drona, do then? And what did King Duryodhana, of dull wit, do?

samprādruvatsu dāreṣu kṣatriyāṇāṃ mahātmanām | vidrute śibire śūnye bhṛśodvignāstrayo rathāḥ

While the wives of the great-souled kshatriyas were fleeing and the camp, abandoned, stood empty, the three warriors in their chariots were deeply distressed.

Verse 6 (9.30.6)

niśamya pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ tadā vaijayināṃ svanam | vidrutaṃ śibiraṃ dṛṣṭvā sāyāhne rājagṛddhinaḥ | sthānaṃ nārocayaṃstatra tataste hradamabhyayuḥ

Hearing the roar of the victorious sons of Pandu, and seeing the camp deserted as evening came, those who were devoted to the king's cause had no wish to remain there, and so they went to the lake.

Note on the text: Corrected राजगृद्विनः → राजगृद्धिनः (misprint in Wikisource; द्वि for द्धि; the critical edition reads rājagṛddhinaḥ). Corrected हदमभ्ययुः → ह्रदमभ्ययुः (misprint in Wikisource; dropped the conjunct ह्र; the critical edition reads hrada).

Verse 7 (9.30.7)

yudhiṣṭhiro'pi dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito raṇe | hṛṣṭaḥ paryapatadrājanduryodhanavadhepsayā

And Yudhishthira too, the righteous-souled, together with his brothers, rushed joyfully into the field, O king, eager to slay Duryodhana.

Verse 8 (9.30.8)

mārgamāṇāstu saṅkruddhāstava putraṃ jayaiṣiṇaḥ | yatnato'nveṣamāṇāste naivāpaśyañjanādhipam

Furious, and eager for victory, they searched for your son, looking for him with great effort, but they could not find the lord of men.

Verse 9 (9.30.9)

yadā duryodhano yuddhaṃ tyaktvā padbhyāṃ parākramat | taṃ hradaṃ prāviśaccāpi viṣṭabhyāpaḥ svamāyayā

When Duryodhana abandoned the battle and went off on foot, he entered that lake and held its waters fast by his own magic.

Note on the text: Corrected पराक्रममत् → पराक्रमत् (misprint in Wikisource; stray म; the word is the imperfect पराक्रमत्, and the critical edition's parallel line has apākramat). Corrected तं हदं → तं ह्रदं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped the conjunct ह्र; the critical edition reads hrada). Line 2 is the critical edition's 9.29.7c (taṃ hradaṃ prāviśac cāpi viṣṭabhyāpaḥ svamāyayā); line 1 is a recension variant of its star passage 9.29.7b*0181_01 (yadā duryodhano yuddhaṃ tyaktvā pattir apākramat), which the critical edition prints in place of 7a–b (sa hi tīvreṇa vegena gadāpāṇir apākramat).

Verse 11 (9.30.11)

tataḥ kṛpaśca drauṇiśca kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ | sanniviṣṭeṣu pārtheṣu prayayustaṃ hadaṃ śanaiḥ

Then Kripa, the son of Drona, and Kritavarma of the Satvatas, once the Parthas had settled down, made their way slowly to that lake.

Verse 12 (9.30.12)

te taṃ hradaṃ samāsādya yatra śete janādhipaḥ | abhyabhāṣanta durdharṣaṃ rājānaṃ suptamambhasi

Reaching the lake where the lord of men lay, they addressed the formidable king as he lay in the water.

Note on the text: Corrected तं हदं → तं ह्रदं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped the conjunct ह्र; the critical edition reads hrada).

Verse 17 (9.30.17)

vijeṣyāmo vayaṃ sarve viśrāntā vigataklamāḥ | bhavantaśca pariśrāntā vayaṃ ca bhṛśavikṣatāḥ | udīrṇaṃ ca balaṃ teṣāṃ tena yuddhaṃ na rocaye

We shall conquer them all, once we are rested and our weariness is gone. But you are tired, and we ourselves are badly wounded, and their strength has swelled; for that reason I do not favour fighting now.

Verse 18 (9.30.18)

na tvetadadbhutaṃ vīrā yadvo mahadidaṃ manaḥ | asmāsu ca parā śaktirna tu kālaḥ parākrame

It is no wonder, heroes, that your spirit is so great, and we too have great strength; but this is not the time for valour.

Note on the text: The page's own labels are odd here (the second line of this verse is labelled 9-28-18b, and the next three rows 9-28-19 to 9-28-21), but the division is right. Line 2 reads परा शक्तिः on the page; the page's apparatus gives परा भक्तिः (the critical edition's bhaktiḥ) as a variant reading.

Verse 19 (9.30.19)

Note on the text: Restored from the raw page: the input parser dropped this row because the page labels it 9-28-NN (a mislabel for this adhyaya's 9-30-NN); the text and its place in the narrative belong to this adhyaya. Critical edition 9.29.17 (viśramyaikāṃ niśām adya …), whose second line reads śvo na me 'sty atra saṃśayaḥ; the page's second line is a recension variant.
