Balarama Sets Out on Pilgrimage
Janamejaya asks how Balarama, who had refused to side with either army, came to be present at the end. Vaishampayana tells how Krishna's mission of peace failed, how Balarama, angered, left with the Yadavas on a pilgrimage up the Sarasvati, how provision was made for Brahmins all along the road, and how he gave away great wealth at the holy places until he reached Kurukshetra. Asked about the merits of the Sarasvati's tirthas, Vaishampayana begins with Prabhasa, where the Moon, freed from his curse, shines again.

'I shall give no help to Dhritarashtra's son, Keshava, and I shall not go to the sons of Pandu either; I shall go away as I came.'
Note on the text: Speaker: the whole verse is Balarama's own words to Keshava, quoted inside Janamejaya's question; the page heads Janamejaya (9-35-1x) for verses 1–4, and the words are given to Balarama.

Having said this, Rama, the destroyer of foes, departed. O Brahmin, you should now tell of his coming back again.
Note on the text: Corrected ब्रह्मञ्शं सितुमर्हसि → ब्रह्मञ्शंसितुमर्हसि (misprint in Wikisource; a stray space splits शंसितुम्; the critical edition reads brahmañ śaṃsitum arhasi).

Note on the text: Corrected निर्गच्छध्व → निर्गच्छध्वं (misprint in Wikisource; the final anusvara is dropped; the critical edition reads nirgacchadhvaṃ). Speaker: the verse is Krishna's own words to the Pandavas, filling the whole verse; the page heads Vaishampayana from 9-35-5x, so it is given to Vasudeva.
