The Sarasvati Carries Vasishtha Away from Vishvamitra
Janamejaya asks how the Vasishthapavaha tirtha got its name, and Vaishampayana tells of the rivalry in austerity between Vishvamitra and Vasishtha. Vishvamitra summons the Sarasvati and orders her to bring Vasishtha to him so that he may kill him. Torn between two curses, she lets Vasishtha, at his own bidding, be carried on her swept-away bank; she brings him to Vishvamitra but then, fearing the killing of a brahmin, bears him away to the east. In rage Vishvamitra curses her to carry blood for a year.
