Shalya Parva · Adhyaya 44

The Sarasvati Freed from the Curse; Indra Freed of Namuchi's Head

Rakshasas drink the blood that the cursed Sarasvati carries, until pilgrim sages free her by austerities and worship of Shiva; the hungry Rakshasas then plead with the sages, who tell them what food is theirs, and the river brings the Aruna into her body so that Rakshasas who bathe there are released. Janamejaya asks why Indra needed this tirtha, and Vaishampayana tells how Indra killed Namuchi in breach of his pledge and was freed of the guilt by Brahma's counsel to sacrifice and bathe at the Sarasvati-Aruna confluence. Balarama then goes on to Soma's tirtha.
