The Birth of Kumara

Janamejaya asks to hear of Kumara's consecration, and Vaishampayana begins with his birth: the seed of Shiva that Agni could not bear is placed in Ganga, who casts it on the Himalaya, where the Krittikas find the child in a clump of reeds and he drinks their milk. The gods, sages and hosts of spirits gather to see him; when he approaches Shiva, Uma, Ganga and Agni, he makes himself fourfold so as to go to each at once. Brahma, asked to give him a lordship, grants him the command of all beings, and the gods bring him to the bank of the Sarasvati for the consecration.
