Skanda Is Consecrated as Commander
Vaishampayana describes how Skanda (Kartikeya) is consecrated as commander of the gods' army. Brihaspati offers the fire sacrifice, and the gods, sages, spirits, rivers, mountains and goddesses gather with the holy waters of the Sarasvati; Brahma and the others consecrate him. Brahma, Sthanu, the gods and the great powers of the world then give him attendants, whose names are recited at length, and the chapter ends with the endless host of many-faced, many-weaponed followers who surround him in joy.
