Skanda's Host of Mothers; the Fall of Taraka and Bana
Vaishampayana names the long troop of Mothers who follow Kumara, describes their many shapes and powers, and tells how the gods arm Skanda and give him the army called Dhananjaya. Marching out as commander, he slays Taraka, Mahisha, Tripada and Hradodara with their hosts, then splits Mount Krauncha with the Shakti and kills Bana, son of Bali, and his brother. The gods rejoice, men debate whose son he is, and Vaishampayana closes the account of the consecration and names the Aushana tirtha, where Balarama bathes and gives gifts.
