Devala and Jaigishavya

Vaishampayana tells of Asita Devala, a householder-ascetic, and the silent mendicant Jaigishavya who lives in his hermitage. Devala finds Jaigishavya waiting for him at the ocean and follows him through world after world up to the realm of Brahma, which he cannot enter. Humbled, he asks Jaigishavya for instruction, renounces the household life despite the weeping of the beings who depended on him, and attains perfection. Balarama then bathes there, gives gifts to the brahmins, and goes on to the great tirtha of Soma.

tasminneva tu dharmātmā vasati sma tapodhanaḥ | gārhasthyaṃ dharmamāsthāya asito devalaḥ purā

In that same place there once lived a righteous man rich in austerity, Asita Devala, who had taken up the householder's way of life.

Verse 2 (9.51.2)

dharmanityaḥ śucirdānto nyastadaṇḍo mahātapāḥ | karmaṇā manasā vācā samaḥ sarveṣu jantuṣu

Ever devoted to dharma, pure and self-controlled, he had laid down the rod of violence; that great ascetic was even-minded toward all creatures in deed, thought and speech.

Verse 3 (9.51.3)

akrodhano mahārāja tulyanindāpriyāpriyaḥ | kāñcane loṣṭake caiva samadarśī mahātapāḥ

Free of anger, O great king, and alike toward blame and praise, the pleasant and the unpleasant, that great ascetic looked with an equal eye on a clod of earth and on gold.

evaṃ tayormahārāja dīrghakālo vyatikramat | jaigīṣavyaṃ muniṃ caiva na dadarśātha devalaḥ

In this way, O great king, a long time went by, and Devala did not see the sage Jaigishavya.

devalastu yathāśakti pūjayāmāsa bhārata | ṛṣidṛṣṭena vidhinā samā bahvyaḥ samāhitaḥ

Devala, O Bharata, honoured him as best he could, with the rite the seers have taught, with a collected mind, for many years.

Verse 17 (9.51.17)

So the great seer Asita wondered; then he bathed in the ocean according to rule and, purified, recited his silent prayer.

Verse 18 (9.51.18)

kṛtajapyāhnikaḥ śrīmānāśramaṃ ca jagāma ha | kalaśaṃ jalapūrṇaṃ vai gṛhītvā janamejaya

His daily prayers finished, the glorious one returned to his hermitage, O Janamejaya, carrying the pot filled with water.

Verse 19 (9.51.19)

cintayāmāsa rājendra tadā sa munisattamaḥ | mayā dṛṣṭaḥ samudre ca āśrame ca kathaṃ tvayam

That best of sages thought further, O king of kings: "I saw him in the ocean, and I see him in the hermitage — how can this be?"

Verse 24 (9.51.24)
