Shalya Anointed Commander; Krishna Urges His Death
Shalya boasts to Duryodhana that he will lead the army and defeat the Pandavas, and Duryodhana anoints him commander in the midst of the host, to the cheers of the troops. Yudhishthira, hearing the uproar, asks Krishna what to do. Krishna praises Shalya as the equal of Bhishma, Drona and Karna and urges Yudhishthira to kill him, without sparing him as his mother's brother. Krishna returns to his camp, and both armies sleep that night.

"O mighty-armed Duryodhana, best of those who know how to speak, listen. Those two Krishnas whom you take to be the foremost of chariot-warriors as they stand in their chariot — neither of them is a match for me in strength of arm, in any way.
