Krishna Consoles Dhritarashtra and Gandhari

Janamejaya asks why Yudhishthira sent Krishna to Gandhari. Vaishampayana explains that Yudhishthira, fearing the anger of the austere Gandhari at the unfair killing of Duryodhana, asked Krishna to go and calm her. Krishna drives to Hastinapura, where he finds Vyasa with Dhritarashtra, reminds Dhritarashtra of his own part in the war and urges him not to hate the Pandavas, then speaks gently to Gandhari, who yields to his words and weeps. Krishna, who has realised that Ashvatthama is planning mischief, takes leave and returns to the Pandava camp.
