Arjuna's Chariot Burns; Krishna Goes to Gandhari

The Pandavas enter Duryodhana's empty camp and dismount. Krishna has Arjuna get down first and then steps down himself, whereupon the chariot, long since burned by the weapons of Drona and Karna, bursts into flames and falls to ashes; Krishna explains that it stood only because he had been upon it. He congratulates Yudhishthira on the victory, and Yudhishthira praises Krishna's part in it. The Pandavas take the wealth of Duryodhana's camp, spend the night by the river Oghavati, and send Krishna to Hastinapura to pacify Gandhari.

Then all those kings set out for their resting places, blowing their conchs joyfully, their arms like iron bars.

It was like a city whose festival is over, like a lake whose elephant has been carried off, filled for the most part with women and eunuchs and watched over by aged counsellors.

Note on the text: Corrected हदम् → ह्रदम् (misprint in Wikisource; dropped conjunct; the critical edition reads hradam).
