Vasuhoma Tells Mandhata How Danda Arose

Bhishma tells of King Vasuhoma, living at Munjaprishtha, whom King Mandhata visits to ask how Danda came into being. Vasuhoma tells how Danda vanished during Brahma's sacrifice and the world fell into confusion, and how Mahadeva then brought it forth from himself, together with Dandaniti and the branches of learning. Shiva then appointed a lord over each class of beings, and Danda passed from Vishnu through Angiras, Marichi and Bhrigu down to Manu. The chapter closes with the chain of watchfulness that rests on Danda and with Bhishma's concluding words.
