Shanti Parva · Adhyaya 171

The Ungrateful Gautama Is Cut Down

Bhishma goes on with the tale of Gautama and the crane-king Rajadharma. Gautama kills his sleeping host with a burning brand, roasts the body and flees with the gold. When Rajadharma fails to come home, Virupaksha, king of the Rakshasas, sends his son to look for him; the Rakshasas find the bones under the banyan, seize Gautama and bring him before the king. The Rakshasas refuse to eat the ingrate, and so do the servants and the carrion-eaters, and Gautama is hacked to pieces. Bhishma closes with the rule that there is atonement for every sin except ingratitude.

Verse 1 (12.171.1)

atha tatra mahārciṣmānanalo vātasārathiḥ | tasyāvidūre rakṣārthaṃ khagendreṇa kṛto'bhavat

Now there, not far from them, the king of birds had set a great blazing fire, fanned by the wind, to keep guard.

Verse 2 (12.171.2)

sa cāpi pārśve suṣvāpa viśvasto bakarāṭ tadā | kṛtaghnastu sa duṣṭātmā taṃ jighāṃsurajāgarīt

The king of the cranes, trusting him, lay down to sleep at his side; but the wicked ingrate, bent on killing him, stayed awake.

Verse 3 (12.171.3)

Then with a burning brand he struck down the sleeper, and having killed him he was glad, and gave no thought to the consequence.

Verse 4 (12.171.4)

sa taṃ vipakṣaromāṇaṃ kṛtvā'gnāvapacattadā | taṃ gṛhītvā suvarṇaṃ ca yayau drutataraṃ dvijaḥ

He singed off its feathers and cooked it in the fire, then took it, together with the gold, and the brahmin hurried away.

Note on the text: Lines = CE 12.166.4a, 12.166.4c. The CE's star lines 12.166.4b*0443_01-02 (pakvānnaṃ bhakṣayitvā ca …) are not on the page.

Verse 5 (12.171.5)

tato dākṣāyaṇīputraṃ nāgataṃ taṃ tu bhārata | virūpākṣaścintayanvai hṛdayena vidūyatā

Then, O Bharata, when Rajadharma, the son of Dakshayani, did not return, Virupaksha began to brood, his heart in pain.

Note on the text: Removed the stray backtick opening the verse and the quote mark and doubled daṇḍa closing it. Not in the CE's constituted text: both lines are the CE star passage 12.166.4d*0444_01-02 (tato dākṣāyaṇīputraṃ nāgataṃ taṃ tu bhārata / virūpākṣaś cintayan vai hṛdayena vidūyatā); the alignment found no match.

Verse 6 (12.171.6)

The next day Virupaksha said to his son: "Son, today I do not see Rajadharma, the best of birds."

He always goes at first twilight to pay homage to Brahma, and that bird never goes home without having seen me.

Note on the text: Speaker set to Virupaksha: verses 7-11 are wholly his speech to his son, begun in the second line of verse 6; Wikisource prints no heading (the input carried भीष्म). Lines = CE 12.166.6a, 12.166.6c; the CE's star line 6b*0445_01 is not on the page.

dvirātramubhayoḥ sandhyornābhyagacchanmamālayam | tasmānna śuddhyate bhāvo mama sa jñāyatāṃ suhṛt

For two days he has come to my house at neither twilight, so my mind is not at ease. Let that friend be looked for.

svādhyāyena viyukto hi brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ | sa gatastatra me śaṅkā hanyāttaṃ sa dvijādhamaḥ

That man is cut off from the study of the Veda and bereft of a brahmin's radiance. He has gone to that place, and I fear that the vilest of brahmins may have killed him.

durācāraḥ sa durbuddhiriṅgitairlakṣito mayā | niṣkṛpo dāruṇākāro duṣṭo dasyurivādhamaḥ | gautamaḥ sa gatastatra tenodvignaṃ mano mama

I have read him by his signs: ill-conducted, evil-minded, pitiless, grim in look, wicked, like a base bandit. That Gautama went there, and so my mind is troubled.

putra śīghramito gatvā rājadharmaniveśanam | jñāyatāṃ sa viśuddhātmā yadi jīvati vā ciram

So instructed, he set out in haste with some Rakshasas, and there under the banyan tree he saw Rajadharma lying dead.

Note on the text: Removed a stray asterisk before न्यग्रोधे (a footnote mark on the page). manuvrajaṃ tu nagaraṃ yātudhānāstato gatāḥ | krodharaktekṣaṇā ghorā gautamasya vadhe dhṛtāḥ

Then the Yatudhanas went to the city of Manuvraja, fearsome, red-eyed with fury, set on the killing of Gautama.

Note on the text: Not in the CE's constituted text: lines = the CE star passage 12.166.25d*0446_06-07 (the CE has merupṛṣṭhe ca nagaraṃ for Wikisource's मनुव्रजं तु नगरं; the place-name मनुव्रज is kept as the page's reading, a recension variant — the same page's variant table and CE 12.166.14 have मेरुव्रज / meruvraja).

pārthivasyāgrato nyastaḥ kaṅkālo rājadharmaṇaḥ | taṃ dṛṣṭvā vimanā rājā sāmātyaḥ sagaṇo'bhavat

Rajadharma's skeleton was laid before the king, and seeing it the king, with his ministers and his following, was downcast.

"We shall all gather and eat his flesh. He does sin, his acts are sinful, his soul is sinful, he is fixed in sin. This sinner must certainly be killed; he is an ingrate, there is no doubt of it."

Note on the text: Speaker heading printed on the page as “राक्षमा ऊचुः” (misprint for राक्षसा ऊचुः); spelled राक्षसा and made the speaker (speaker: राक्षस). Not in the CE's constituted text: lines 1-2 = the CE star passage 12.166.25d*0446_13-14 (CE heads them rākṣasā ūcuḥ); line 3 = the CE star passage 12.166.25d*0446_15 (hantavya eva pāpātmā kṛtaghno nātra saṃśayaḥ), which the CE prints after the heading virūpākṣa uvāca; the page's own heading for Virupaksha follows this verse, so the third line stays with the Rakshasas, as printed.
