Remembering Narayana at the Hour of Death

Yudhishthira asks what those who seek liberation should repeat and remember when death draws near. Bhishma answers with what Narada once asked the god Narayana: the Lord teaches him the mantra "Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya", Narada praises him in a long hymn of refuge, and the Lord then explains the withdrawal of the senses and elements into the Self, the worth of devotion above rites, and the mantra "Namo Narayanaya". Bhishma urges Yudhishthira to meditate on the Supreme in the same way.

Having studied this supreme secret remembrance, one gains a steadfast understanding; casting off sorrows and freed from distress, he becomes free of passion, free of fever, and happy.

Note on the text: Repaired the line division: Wikisource breaks the lines inside sandhi (परमामनुस्मृति / मधीत्य and सङ्कटा / त्स), so the final म् of अनुस्मृतिम् and the final त् of सङ्कटात् were printed at the start of the next line; restored the word forms अनुस्मृतिम् / अधीत्य and सङ्कटात् / स (as in the CE lines 168-171). No words added or dropped. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 168-171 (12.202.033d@017B_0168-0171) of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 17B, printed after 12.202.33).
