Garuda's Account of Vishnu's Greatness
Yudhishthira asks who truly knows the nature of Vishnu, and Bhishma recalls a conversation he once had with Garuda on an island in the Ganga. Garuda tells how, proud of his strength, he asked the Lord for the boon of standing above him, and was then carried through the divine realms and the endless universes until his pride was humbled. He closes by saying that Hari is seen only through knowledge and reached by undivided devotion.

tanmadhye sāgarānsapta brahmāṇaṃ ca tathā surān | paśyāmyahaṃ yathāyogaṃ mātaraṃ svakulaṃ tathā
In its midst I saw, in due order, the seven oceans, Brahma and the gods, and my mother and my own family as well.
Note on the text: Corrected तन्सध्ये → तन्मध्ये (misprint in Wikisource; स for म, "in its midst", as in the critical edition tanmadhye). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines of the CE's inline Appendix I passage 17C (printed after 12.202.033 as 12.202.033d@017C_0143-0144); Wikisource divides it into verses differently.

evaṃ mayā'nubhūtaṃ hi tatvānveṣaṇakāṅkṣiṇā | śibikāsadṛśaṃ māṃ vai paśyadhvaṃ munisattamāḥ
Thus did I experience it, desiring to search out the truth. See me, best of sages, as no more than a palanquin.

ityevamabravaṃ viprānbhīṣma yanme purā'bhavat | tatte sarvaṃ yathānyāyamuktavānasmi sattama
So, O Bhishma, I told those Brahmins what had happened to me long ago; and I have told you all of it just as it was, best of men.

yoginastaṃ prapaśyanti jñānaṃ dṛṣṭvā paraṃ harim | nānyathā śakyarūposau jñānagamyaḥ paraḥ pumān
Yogis see him: through knowledge they behold the supreme Hari. In no other way can that form be known; the Supreme Person is to be reached by knowledge.

अनन्यया च भक्त्या च प्राप्तुं शक्यो महाहरिः ॥

And by undivided devotion the great Hari can be attained.

ityevamuktvā bhagavānsuparṇaḥ pakṣirāṭ prabhuḥ | āmantrya jananīṃ me vai tatraivāntaradhīyata
Having spoken thus, the lord Suparna, king of birds, took leave of my mother and vanished then and there.

Therefore, king of kings, Vasudeva, the Self of all, the maker of the primal principle, is easily reached through knowledge and devotion, and not otherwise: that is my conviction.
