Bali and Indra: The Rule of Time
Yudhishthira asks what is best for a man sunk in calamity, and Bhishma answers that steadiness is, and tells the old conversation of Bali and Indra. Meeting the fallen Daitya king Bali in a mountain cave, Indra taunts him for not grieving over his lost kingdom. Bali replies that Time alone makes and unmakes lords, that Indras and kings beyond counting have passed away, and that grief achieves nothing. Moved by his calm, Indra spares him further harm, foretells the end of his bonds, and returns to heaven praised by the seers.
